241 pages. Includes 2015 Afterword.

This is the fifth book in the Quarry series, originally published in 1987 as Primary Target, now available from Hard Case Crime.

The story follows Quarry after he has retired from the "killing game," happily married, and expecting his first child. His quiet life is interrupted when a stranger offers him one million dollars to assassinate a radical presidential candidate. Despite the significant payout, Quarry turns the job down due to the contentment he has found in his personal life.

This refusal has dire consequences: the conspirators behind the contract view him as a "loose end" that needs to be eliminated. After a brutal attack destroys everything he holds dear, a vengeful Quarry comes out of retirement to hunt down those who targeted him.

This is another satisfying adventure for the hitman. The motivation this time is personal. Although the plot involves a political campaign, the author avoids pushing any partisan agenda. Reads like a classic Pulp novel, sprinkled with dark humor and historical tidbits.

This was intended as a 'final' novel for Quarry in the timeline, but several novels set after this one have since been published!

There is violence as would be expected, given the subject matter.

I highly recommend this one. Couldn't put it down.
