Does anybody have a good Vallejo reference for British tanks in 1940 ?

Probert07 Feb 2007 4:32 p.m. PST

Vallejo make a Bronze Green 897 which is a good color.

For the British in 1940 they used up to three greens on their tanks:

G.3 Khaki Green #3 formerly Middle Bronze Green#23
G.4 Dark Gren #4 formerly Deep Bronze Green #24
G.5 Light Green #5 formely Light Bronze Green #22

I assume the Vallejo Bronze Green is used as the G.4 color but what is best to use for the G.3 color?

Thank you
Jon

That might depend on the scale of your miniatures. The smaller the surface the darker it will look.

Yes at 3mm I need lighter versions.

"I assume the Vallejo Bronze Green is used as the G.4 color but what is best to use for the G.3 color?"

I recently did some comparison of Vallejo's with my "bible" guide article by Mike Starmer, and it turns out the best match for G3 would be #893 US Dark Green. Haven't found the match for G5 yet, but I'm not really inclined as it went out of use early in the WW II, and I'm building NW Europe Brit force.

Here's the link:

Please note, however, that colour mixes are for enamels only. I came up with Vallejo match just by comparing colours of actual paints IRL (luckily, I still have lots of Humbrol and Revell enamels, just in case).

I understand that Mike Starmer is trying to develop matches for Vallejo but he doesn't have a ready supply to hand so it might be some time.

Good news nevertheless, Huw – thanks.

The recommendation for US Dark Green is one I will look to try.

Col Piron, do you have other FOW painting guides where the paints are Vallejo and not their inhouse brand?

I am no expert, but those tanks don't look quite like my mental picture of BEF tanks.

Below is what I'd expect.

And it's vallejo.

I agree colkitto. Not my impression of BEF tank colours either.

That might depend on the scale of your miniatures. The smaller the surface the darker it will look.

The smaller the scale of the miniature, the more you should lighten your model color when compared to the full-scale color of the prototype. This concept is known as "scale color", and it simulates the effect of outdoor lighting and the amount of atmosphere in between the object and the viewer.

Well, if you want, you could give it a try to my humble BEF painting guide.
