Does anyone have a list of the flag numbers of German DDs at the beginning of the war? I don't mean the Z-numbers, but the large numbers they had painted on the hull sides below the bridge? They don't seem to be related to hull numbers at all – I have pictures of Z-4 with an '11' on the hull, Z-20 with a '42,' etc. Was there any system to this, or were they random to mess with enemy intelligence?

They were flotilla identification numbers. I.e. 53 meant 3rd ship of the 5th flotilla.

Check out German Destroyers of WW2 by M.J. Whitley
there isnt a specific chart in this publication on the flotillas but buried in the text in one of the chapters he identifies which ships belonged to each of the various flotillas.

Absolutely spot on BuckeyeBob.
German markings are flotilla identification, unlike British or US ships, where the number is the ship's personal id regardless of which squadron or flotilla it is in.
