I am trying to determine how to paint Scharnhorst and Prinz Eugen for the Channel Dash. (Gneisnau too, as soon as I convert one in 1/2400). I have the CoA naval camo book, and it gives a good broadside view of Scharnhorst. However, I can't determine what color the deck would be. According to said book, wood decks were left bare at the beginning of the war, but by 1942 I suspect they would have been painted dark grey or such. Anyone know? I have a vague recollection the PE was wearing a splinter pattern of some sort, but I don't have a picture. I have thes ame problem with the deck as above. Can anyone provide any help? My Google-Fu has failed me this time. |

Try these. You wouldn't really paint a natural wood deck. link link There is a a new book out on "Kriegsmarine Colours: Vol 1"
.should be available at your local hobby shop
polish publication, translated into English
loads of colour illustrations. |

As close as come be determined, the German major ships kept natural wood throughout the war (unlike the US or RN). (For example, according to Kriegsmarine Colours: Vol 1, Tirpitz's deck was left unpainted all the way through 1944.) The unplanked sections would be painted dark gray. Keep in mind, its hard to say with absolute certainty since much of the data relating to German camo practice was lost during and just after the war. So natural decks for Cerebus would probably be the case. BTW, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau are reported to have carried the red banner and swastiki air recognition markings on their fore and quarter decks. |

BTW, if you go to YouTube and search for "Kriegsmarine", there are a couple of short clips (some propaganda) of Operation Cerberus. |

I believe the color scheme for the Channel Dash is in the book by Squadron/Signal on the Kriegsmarine in Action. Unfortunately, I think it's out of print. I'll check my copy when I get hom tonight. (If I remember!) |
