As I my Royalist and Rebel armies for Sedgemoor are nearing completion, I am thinking more about possible rules. There are some decent rulesets available for the period (V&B, GaPa, Captain-General, etc
), but what would work best for such a small battle? The Royalists only had 6 battalions of foot and 3 regiments of horse, while Monmout had about 5 regiments of foot and 2 units of horse
I like my games to be simple and short in duration (3 hours max). Could Principles of War work? Is there anything ruleset that I didn't mention? What are your opinions? My foot units are 15mm, 3 bases of 6 figures, and while most of my horse is painted, I haven't based it (probably 2 bases of 4 figures). Thanks! |

Yep POW would work but the armies are still very small even for that set. How about the old school(ish) set by Stuart Asqith which was written for the War of Spanish Succession but IIRC also covered Monmouth's rebellion too. Graham |

You could try 'Under the Lilly Banner' from the League of Augsburg site leagueofaugsburg.com, or the Edingburgh Wargamers site who have a set called 'Lillibro' edinburghwargames.com (go to their Early period page and pick Williamite). You can download the rules from there. A third option might be to use an ECW set, an example is 'Victory without Quarter' is down-loadable from Quindia quindia.com. All of these seem to fit your specification and aim to give the kind of game you're looking for. |

I must admit, that while I've only read (and not yet played) either rule set, that I like BOTH Barry Hilton's "Under the Lily Banner" and Clarence Harrison's "Victory Without Quarter". Both read well, sound like fun, are usable for the size battle you're looking for and use basically the same basing. Additionally, both are available from their authors for free. I use captain general for my Glorious Revolution battles with similarly sized armies to yours. The rules are morale based so no need to remove figures, but are a good set for smaller battles, I am thinking of using them for Sedgemoor myself. Simon |

Simon, I have a copy of "Captain General" . . . but have never managed to actually read it. The sheer amount of detail and charts keeps intimidating me. Is it really as complex as it seems when scanning it? I prefer very simple rules. -- Jeff

Jeff It is like most rule sets, it is different but once played a couple of times things seem to slot into place. The tables make sense once played through but I know what you mean. Unfortunately I don't get to play it that often, but I do like the way it plays. It is important to create an OB as units have different abilities/qualities, I would suggest try out a couple of small games to get to grips with the mechanisms. Simon |

I'm curious. Why no recommendation for Warhammer ECW? It would seem to be the right size for this one. I'm not a WECW partisan, by the way. |

I own Warhammer ECW, and if I was doing this project in 25mm, and basing individually, I'd probably go with WECW (maybe I will do that eventually). I own Captain-General, will have to look at them again for Sedgemoor. I looked at the League of Augsburg website, but could not find the full ruleset of ULB
it is a shame, it seems to recommend basing similar to what I have done. |

I don't recall whether it is joining "Fighting Talk" or signing up for his newsletter (very rarely appearing) or what . . . but if I recall it is one of the two. Email Barry and let him know that you'd like a copy of the rules (his email must be somewhere on the "League of Augsburg" website. -- Jeff

I've just managed to find and download Lillibulero. To clarify seamusbradley's instructions: Go to Early Periods. Click on War of the Grand Alliance in fourth paragraph. Scroll down to bottom of page where you will find link under My Anglo-Dutch Army. |

Other than the uniforms, there was not much to distinguish the tactics and troop types/qualities from the late ECW period (even the deployment of grenadiers at Philips Norton was only as a Forlorn Hope). So unless you particularly want to try out rulesets for the slightly later Williamite conflicts in Ireland and Flanders, it isn't essential if you already have any decent ECW rules around. Whatever you use, it shouldn't be a particularly long or tactically nuanced game! |
