Just bought one of these from Grand Manner at Warfare.

link

It's been out about a month but I hadn't seen anything about it on TMP. I had thought I might have to scartchbuild one so this is the answer to a prayer!

According to Dave Bodley of GM it's the beginning of a range inspired by the Simon Scarrow book "The Eagle's Prophecy". Merchant ships will follow and Illyrian pirate ships. Gripping Beast will be producing crews to go with their new Roman marines. Also coming up are Carthaginian galleys.

It's a hefty bit (or bits) of resin and I still haven't worked out what I am going to do about the oars (not included, unlike the Gripping Beast viking ship) but it does include correctly cut dowling for the masts (unlike the GB Viking ship)

Just very excited about this!!

PTCohn20 Nov 2006 10:45 a.m. PST

I was thinking about getting one of those. Great to know that more will follow. This is now a definite purchase!

Skeptic20 Nov 2006 11:49 a.m. PST

Alright! Do you know if the crews will be made available separately, e.g. for crewing converted plastic ships to match the resin ones?

Cheers,

Skeptic

All the boats shown are very nice! I have the Old Glory versions so i hope he expands the range.

I've not seen the ship, but conceivably you might be able to get a small-diameter dowelling, or perhaps bamboo skewers, cut to size. Flagship Games' oared ships (for their Pirates! range, and including some ancient ships) have seperate banks of oars that can be moved out of the way for ramming/boarding actions. I'm not sure if they sell the oar banks seperately, or if they'd even fit, but they have photos which might give you some ideas for making your own.

I'd suggest a piece of good solid basing material, painted suitably and cut to the required length (along the ship) and width (out from the ship), with a clear plastic "wall" – made of clear plasticard or even plastic from figure blisters – at 90 degrees running along the long side which will abutt the ship's side, with the dowel/bamboo/plastic rod oars running diagonally from the clear part to the base, in as many banks as required. Check out the photos on FSG's site and I'm sure you'll get what I mean. I'll add the link here: link (you'll need to scroll down to the Ancients stuff).

Also, any idea if Gripping Beast are doing slave rowers that I might be able to pressgang into an 18th century Turkish galley?

Those are really cool looking galleys. Very tempting.

Perhaps use coathanger wire for the oars?

How about trying model boat shops/suppliers?

Garrison Miniatures24 Jul 2007 2:38 a.m. PST

One example that is on my favourites – there are a lot of others around, believe me.

Ha haa! Nice one, Centurion. Like it. Like it.

Lets try this again…

Whatever happened to [Grand Manner's plans of several years ago to add[ "Illyrian pirate ships [to their 28mm ship & boat line-up]??"
I've got one of Grand Manner's 28mm Roman Grain/Trade ships (crying out to me to be completed!), and an Illyrian Pie-Rat liburnian or vessel to harry it would be interesting… 'Course, that would require me to get off the dime and make up my mind about at least one Roman 28mm sea-going anti-piracy vessel to add to my "fleet" to escort the Grain Ship…

Legion (Mike!), or anyone else with some thoughts… Any recommendations on a good choice, and the pros/cons of the choices? From what I can tell:

1) Flagship Games' 25mm "Trireme" @ Scale Creep (Pirate Ship section)…

2) Grand Manner's 28mm Roman Warship (LR-47)

or GM's "Liberian" (sic) "A" -- they mean LIBURNIAN…

or their "Liberian" (sic) "B"

Given the similarity to this artistic rendering of an Illyrian "Liburnica" I wonder if the two "Liburnians" aren't the "Illyrians" that GM was referring to some years ago as "planned," but they haven't made it clear since release that these were meant as "pirates," not as Roman patrol vessels??

Anyway… GM's got "place holders" up on the website, but no images or prices up, for a "Large Roman Galley" and "Large Carthaginian Galley…" The Roman is said to be,

Quinquereme /the power of the sea, two turrets, flag ship.
In some circles, we call that an "indicator!" Might the two big'ens be debuted at Salute!??

3) Old Glory's 25mm "Trireme" in the "Galley Wars" section…

I am not too sure about going for their "larger" galleys… e.g.:

However, then again, Old Glory's ships are relatively inexpensive… compared to the others!!!! beer

WillieB08 Apr 2013 1:48 a.m. PST

Where can I find these Old Glory ships? AFAIK not on their UK website. or I'm missing something obvious.

They don't look all that great but perhaps with a bit of work can be made decent. Still looking for a 'smallish' Saxon boat or a good base for a conversion.

Come In Nighthawk08 Apr 2013 8:03 a.m. PST

@ WillieB The 'obvious' place is the "Shipyard," and I could not find them there, either. At the back of my remaining few grey-cells, one of the survivors is 'tugging' at me --- that back in the late-70s or 1980s there was a company called Greenleaf (wait, I think those guys make high-security locks), umm, Green-something, that made a line of low-quality, low-budget but passable ships and terrain pieces (actually using one of the kinds of foam sprayed into walls as insulation??). I THINK that OldGlory25s (USA) got the molds and equipment -- at least for the ships -- when Green-something went "belly-up." If you log into the US website and go the the Shipyard > 25mm Ships, you'll see your options. These are, obviously, under "Galley Wars."

The only thing I can think for you to do about the ancient galleys is to either contact OGUK and see if they have any kind of cooperative arrangement with OG25s(USA) and could they get you a couple of the galleys? Failing that, you'll have to email Teresa and see if OG25s would fill your order and mail it across the pond?

On the smallish-Saxons? I have gotten into SAGA in a SMALL way and have gone on the forum and down-loaded the fan-inspired Late Roman notes and Board with the view to some-when this spring trying a game of "Artorius" saving Britannia. I have thought several times about getting another one of OG25s simple models -- from the "Gunboats & Galleys" AmRev & Napoleonic range.

I've thought that with the rudder hacked off and replaced by a simple steer-board, and a simple set of stem and stern post contrived, this would "do." I'd probably add "sea chest" in Viking-fashion as seats, and depending how "early" (or "late") I decided Saxons figured out what wind-power could do for them, I'd fit a "step" for a simple mast and sail…

The OG25s model is almost 10-inches long. There are two vessels that are smaller-yet, but far more "elegant!!" You could try the Grand Manner "Small Viking Trading ship…"

…and/or "Small rowing boat;"

These are only 7.5-inches long, but "pretty!" Be warned -- the "small rowing boat" does not come with any oars… sadly. huh?

Good luck! beer

WillieB12 Apr 2013 7:29 a.m. PST

Thanks very much Nighthawk. How could I have forgotten Grand Manner?

That small Viking trade ship is exactly what I need! If I built up the stern a bit it will be almost identical to the one in the 'Warriors of Arthur' book.
Already ordered the smaller curraghs from Scheltrum for a Salute pick up. And, oddly enough, hope to pick up a few steer skulls from Dixon.

If Andy from Old Glory UK can get them I'll have another look at them, but I doubt that I'm ever going to order from OG US anymore. I'm still reeling from the last time I did.

Love SAGA as well and play it regularly, but I keep it for a slightly later period. Late Roman is one of my favourite periods though.

Have you tried Dux Brittaniarum by the TooFatLardies? One of the very best game systems I've played in years! We've got a six- player campaign running almost weekly at the club and all are eagerly awaiting the Raiders supplement.
If I'm not mistaken the Lardies are giving a 20% discount over the Salute weekend.

@ WillieB. Many (too many!) irons in the fire right now, so sorry not to answer that reply of yours sooner --- and this'll have to be quick.

Grand Manner -- glad to help. I have several of his vessels including one of his Roman Trade/Grain ships (as I have mentioned else-when), and if/when/as I can ever afford another huh? money I am thinking of modifying the second by omitting the after-deck and the Swan's Neck, and contriving a thick stern post to mirror the cast-on stem post. Have looked at a few contemporary Roman bas-reliefs, and it looks to me that not all trade ships seem to have had the Swan -- not sure why, or, why not.

OG25/USA -- sorry to hear that. I have had nothing but good fortune with those folks, BUT, I am this-side-the-pond. WHICH is why I can't get to SALUTE, much as I would like…

SAGA -- yes, good stuff. grin

Dux Brittaniarum -- Haven't seen 'em. Partly (maybe) 'cause I do have a copy of Dux Bellorum: Arthurian Wargaming Rules AD367-793. That said, with so much going on right now, I am embarrassed to admit I do not know where my copy is!! NOT on the shelf where it belongs… So, I haven't had time to study or play them. I addition, I just got a copy of Hail Caesar;

Look behind you Mr. Caesar!!
wink

I have been spending what little free time I DO have looking Hail Caesar over --- have both extant supplements, and the owner/manager at my "local" says he should have Dacia "in the shop soon" (he hopes!!).

Cheers! beer

What I'm after are boats that were used on the Rhine and the Danube…!!! Can anyone point me in the right direction for online pics of sources for these craft and any 28mm models? Your help will be greatly appreciated, many thanks.
