Hello,

Is there any recomendations of resources on OOB's and TOE's covering the USN in this period.

Does this book cover OOB's and TOE's for this era? Also, feel free to give a review.
Full title:
Battle Line: The United States Navy, 1919-1939 by Thomas C. Hone, Trent Hone

Thanks for your time,
-Jim

The appropriate volume of Conway's All The World's Navies is usually your best start point.

Jim,

While I heartily recommend this book for a number of reasons, it is not the source for TOE's you are seeking. Hone's book is a very good read and gives you an excellent feel for navy life and the whys and wherefors of strategy, tactics and doctrine of the USN in the inter-war period. It also contains some interesting and well-captioned illustrations.

Oddly enough, the best TOE I've found for the period exists in BATTLESHIP AND CRUISER AIRCRAFT OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY 1910-1949 by William Larkins. Be prepared for sticker shock unless you can find a used copy somewhere.

I don't know the book myself, but these prices don't seem too bad:

Thanks all for the answers.

Another thing, what about Naval Aviation (incl. USMC)? Such as something covering aircraft? I found "US Navy Aircraft 1921-1941 / US Marine Corps Aircraft 1914-1959" does it mention what type of aircraft belong to which squadron at what time? Are there any other good resources on Naval interwar aircraft?

Thanks,
-Jim

Jim,

If you are seeking aircraft technical & production data, the "Putnam Series" offers the best coverage but you're not going to find specific info regarding squadron allocations there. Interwar coverage of the subject in published works is spotty at best.

For instance, I consulted numerous published/unpublished sources while preparing the CV ship logs for SEEKRIEG 5. The goal was to provide the squadron ID, number and type of aircraft at various times during the ship's career on each version of the ship log sheet. Despite much digging for the RN, USN and IJN, we still came up short regarding the squadron/plane/allocation data but did manage to scrape up enough to provide, for example, 14 logs for ENTERPRISE, 8 for RANGER, 13 for LANGLEY, 14 for HMS EAGLE, and a total of 18 for LEXINGTON & SARATOGA combined.

Hopefully I'll come across additional sources at some point which will provide the necessary data for revisions & additions to the carrier data.
