I am tempted to get some of the PErry's samuria range and want a set of skirmish rules ot go with them. I want about 2 to 3 dozen minis per side, and games to take no more then 2 hours or so. I also want lots of flavour/chrome to make it feel more like a battle in feudal japan. I am thinking a few samurai plus a bunch of ashigaru per side. So, any ideas?

Montjoie! The list can be found on the THW Yahoo Group.

I didn't know there was a feudal japan list for Montjoie! I already have the rules…

Would Monjoie work for Goblin Samurai such as Oni and Bakkemono?

the trojan bunny15 Aug 2006 3:28 p.m. PST

I just checked the files section and I can't find it, any help Ed?

Montjoie doesnt have any fantasy rules, but all of THW rule sets are very house rule friendly. Monsters should be easy enough to write rules for, and a good excuse to rake out the clan war minis!

TMP member Goldwyrm has a set he has been working on.

here is the link to his yahoo group:

the rules can be found in there. I know he runs his games at the cons using this and even they are alot of fun with proper period feel.

I think that GW's LotR Strategy Battle game would make an excellent Samurai game.

We're planning to release a set of fast-play skirmish rules for ancients – "Deksa!"- in a few months. A specialized Samurai Warfare variant will follow right on Deksa!'s sandal heels, perhaps a simultaneous release. Stay tuned…>;D

Road to Osaka, and West Winds Samurai Wars both come to mind. They both are quality dice system and are designed for skirmish play. I have read them both but never played them.

Road to Osaka is terrible. Convoluted to say the least. The Old glory Samurai rules have some decent scenarios. The mechanics aren't great but will work in a pinch. The Japanese Art of War rules are good.

Thanks,

John

There is a set called Bushido which is based on Battlelust which works nicely. Plus there are several other sets on the Free Wargames Rules website which can be tried. We are using a combination of several different sets — "borrowing" the bits that fit with our style of play and general feel for the period.

Lowtardog16 Aug 2006 2:18 a.m. PST

There is a set of Samurai rules based on LOTR in the Yahoo LOTR Variants group. Very good lists

Lonkka16 Aug 2006 2:35 a.m. PST

Katana, a fast and solid set of Samurai rules, from Emperor's Press can also be used for skirmishes.

Dave Crowell16 Aug 2006 4:58 a.m. PST

I gave up on Road to Osaka as I could never figure out how to make all the rules work.

Montjoie! would be a great ruleset for this.

George71rex16 Aug 2006 6:26 a.m. PST

I'd put in a vote for Katana, but you'd only get about two units per side with that number of minis! If you want to represent as many troop types possible and have a fun, feudal-flavored game, I'd vote for LOTR. The LOTR Variants group does have an army list, so you don't have to do any work. Following up on other posters, Katana's scenarios are pretty good.

where can i find the "bushido" ruleset?

DeanMoto16 Aug 2006 8:26 a.m. PST

Universal Skirmish System Yahoo Group has one in their files – link
Japanese Art of War Ver. 1; Ver. 2 should be loaded soon. Haven't played them; but read through it and it seems good (plus free).

Ghostdog — The rules were written back in 95 by a gentleman by the name of Allan Goodall. Not sure if they are still available on the net, but you could try contacting him directly. He has a website at:

hyperbear.com/index.html

There is an email link listed and if you check with him, he may be able to send them to you.

ghostdog16 Aug 2006 9:07 a.m. PST

I have found the file in:

link

THe ruleset is "bujutsu".

Thanks very much, jlstuth. I like realistic games, so I think that I will go the way of battlelust.

thanks again

jlstuht16 Aug 2006 9:50 a.m. PST

No problem — Allan must have changed the name between version 1.0 and 1.1 The earlier version called Bushido may have had a name conflict with some other published set. Now I'll have to see if he made any changes beside the name!

Bunny,
Go to the Files section and check out "Samurai Lite" on the THW Yahoo Group.
