Does anyone know if Demonblade's figures have been picked up by anyone? Will they be returning to production sometime?

RoosterMan29 May 2003 12:41 p.m. PST

My personal opinion... God I hope not. I always thought the miniatures were horrible. Though I know some people really like them.

Not to mention, the later sculpts were HUGE! The sculpts that came over from Grenadier's K-force range were decent, though. I've got a small merc force I use for 40K using the Shock Force troopers. The skeleton thingies were really awful.

BigSteve29 May 2003 1:08 p.m. PST

As I understand it, the owner of the game was able to find backup masters of the figures (long story) and most of them are being returned to production by fans as a labor of love.

There are some in the line I'm not fond of, but I quite like the Vengequan (native Americans with pointy ears)and the Scarlet Brethren (not nearly enough redneck/hillbilly minis out there). Besides, Shock Force itself is one of my top three minis games as far as playability goes (the other two being SuperSystem and Fantasy Rules!) and it definitely merits a look from anyone who hasn't already done so.

I agree with BigSteve--in terms of playability and zany, madcap violence, ShockForce can't be beat!

The figs were hit and miss...the Vengequan and SF Troopers were pretty cool, but I didn't care for much of the rest. But the beauty of the game was that it didn't matter, since you could use pretty much any fig you could put on the table, provided you made stats for it.

Big Steve said it all, as far as the figs are concerned. The hopes are the rules will live on. In the form of a generic core rules, and as genre specific rules which will not rely on any one line of figures.

I tried SF the game because of the SF figures. Many of the Shockforce faction models made good cheaper alternatives to my old 40k imperial guard. Don't play 40k anymore though.

I still own SF, Brethren, Vengequan, and Mutant factions. My favorites are the Vengequan and early Mutants. I liked the Gothrats but never owned any. I agree somewhat on nudspinespittle's Deadtech comment. The personality figures were cool but the skeleton troopers could have been done better.

@Dances- Me too- was the S.R. Capt. Mayhem.

Scurvy29 May 2003 3:24 p.m. PST

The missus got me a bunch of vengequan for christmas off ebay. they are still sold there and sold quite cheap. I really like the quality of the minis I have but havent seen the other forces so cant comment on the robots etc.

Ratbone29 May 2003 4:06 p.m. PST

I agree with the comments about the playability. This game has yet to be beat for me in terms of playability and smooth consistency. I still play several other games, and I started in the 80's on historical games, such as Squad Leader, and Johnny Reb.

For quick play Sci-Fi, this game is excellent. I agree that some of the miniatures are good and some not, but then, what line has ever had ALL great figures? The biggest hit on this line of figures would be that some of them were knockoffs of GW (close enough that it got the company into trouble I think).

If you haven't tried this game, you should. It uses opposed rolls, so even bad roll can hit sometimes (against a bad defense!). And it's infinitely modifiable to create your own stats. And the trooper still wins the day against characters, even though a character will dole out some damage, he won't kill half a dozen guys on his own in one round.

I'll have to admit that I've never really been fond of the official Shock Force setting and minis, though Deadtech came the closest to appealing to me. But I love the game. Of all that I've played, it is the most _fun_.

I have an army of Frogs (from Critter Commandos, plus some Battletech mechs as robots, and some frogs on Star Wars jetbikes, etc). And an army of Terminator-style robots (Necrons). And an army of Dark Legion (mostly from the Siege of the Citadel boardgame). And an army of Space Marines. As you can tell, I'm a big-time fan of the figure-design system.

I actually have been coming up with Shock Force-world backgrounds for the frogs and terminators (making them robots from a pest-control mega-com), but it isn't really important to me.

I got into Shockforce late in the game, so I missed a few good years of throwing my all into a game that I loved. I became a Stormreaver about a week after I played my first game back in 1999.
I have started the long, slow, costly process of making new molds for the minis. I'm doing this because Shockforce is my favorite minis game not because I ever intend to make a fourtune. I also have a couple of most of the minis left over from my Stormreaver days so I'm sure I can get you anything that you need.
You can contact me at lostsendhelp@yahoo.com
I do have to agree that not all of the old sculpts were of the best quality but, most of them are really cool.
I'm also working on some new minis for the game so, "the game is not dead it's just resting."

One of the Gothrat sculptors (Chaz Elliott) is probably the second-best ratguy sculptor *ever*. Now both he and Tim Prow are doing work for Warmachine -- too bad there aren't ratmen in that world.

I'm going to give an unsolicited thumbs-up associated with getting figs from LeXaN. I just got my fourth wave of figs from him and all is well.

BTW, I'm getting my ratdudes ready for Gencon now.

The Lost Soul29 May 2003 10:12 p.m. PST

I'll Chime in here.

ShockForce has some of the best play rules I have ever read. I have been in on the game since the earliest days when Zev posted a request for volunteers on Rec.miniatures.
and you could get the rules on line for free. (think I still have a copy some where)

The original DeadTech left tones to be desired but I was very fond of the Mutant Forces and own near 90 of the little buggers. I still have the Orginal Orgs, Scarlet Brethren and 3 Diffrent "ShockForce" Armies.

In reference to the comment

"The biggest hit on this line of figures would be that some of them were knockoffs of GW (close enough that it got the company into trouble I think)."

This is not a true statement.

The Original Orgs & K-Force Girls were designed and marketed by Grenadier and GW had no problem with that. It was after another company bought the molds, continued with the theme that GW decided that they would force litigation.

Demonblade still being a young company and not able to standup to the legal fees that would be incurred with a lengthily court battle against GW, decided to call it quits with the designs and went a different direction with them.

I have some of the demonblade figures if anyone would like to trade or buy cheaply. Nothing wrong with them as they are stillin the packs. Just have lots of lead. If you're interested email me at ed@twohourwargames.com
Thanks, Ed
BTW They're all Vengequan.

The rules are FAST, FLEXIBLE, FURIOUS and FUN! I have Quan , Rats, Brethern and Shock Force. I REALLY love the Quan. The rest of the figures certainly have a certain charm. I am excited to hear they will be produced again. Need to fill out some gaps. :)

Even IF you don't want the figs the rules ARE very good! They can be tailored to any genre you like. The learning curve is pretty smooth as well. My 9 year old had no trouble picking them up. We have used them for our 40k and Warzone figures. If you like Sci-fi skirmish take a look at these rules. You'll be glad you did. :D

LeXaN0130 May 2003 2:58 p.m. PST

I also have some of the rulebooks for those of you who need them. lostsendhelp@yahoo.com
My favorite factions are the Gothrats and the Scarlet Brethren. The rats are what caught my eye at Dragoncon in 99 and I've been yelling SQUEEEEK!! ever since. The Brethren have a nice hokey appeal, unless you live in the south and actually met people that look like the minis.

NEWS FLASH: On October 1st 2010, MegaMinis.com purchased the rights to all Demon Blade/ Shock Force figures and will be re-releasing them in the coming months.

Omni-Miniatures.com now has some of the Demon Blade miniatures and they are still in production. Some of the Moonshiners line are being used as characters for a new game, "Cows vs. Visitors"
