What colors were the company comander and battalion comanders hats? Did they wear the standard officers style visor hats or the sailor type hats? Thanks Brian |

The sailor type caps were for enlisted. An officer would probably wear the Naval Officer style 1935 hat which would be very dark blue with gold piping (the upper portion would be white for dress uniform). It is also possible he may have worn a pilotka. There is a picture of one on page 237 of Uniforms of the Soviet Union 1918-1945 by David Webster and Chris Nelson of a Navy Petty Officer Pilotka but I havent seen one for an officer. |

Thanks for the help! What color were the navy pilotkas. I know the airforce had blue, were the naval ones black? |

From the photo they appear to be either a very dark, deep blue or black. They have white or faded silver color piping just on the top part. They have the enameled red star symbol like infantry pilotkas. In fact they look quite a bit like the Air Force ones (color wise) with the exception of the different color piping and only on the very top, not on both levels like the Air Force ones. |

Sorry Comrades
Soviet Navy did not wear pilotka. Not sure what "photo" you are referring to, but I've never seen one of GPW Sailors wearing pilotka – black or otherwise. They wore regular Naval cap unless they were in a "Naval Rifle Brigade" (Army unit recruited from Sailors) – then they wore army uniforms (which could include army pilotka) but some kept their Naval cap or wore a helmet. |

I have cited the source and page above. Wonder if the Naval pilotka, and they are quite clear it was for a Petty Officer, was for dress occassion only? |

Soprry I missed that/ I haven't seen the book so can't comment on the picture. It must have been a rarity then (?). |

My guess is it was for dress uniform Leningrad with the sailors in the dress sailors cap and the officers in the round hats so something for the Petty Officers, but only a guess. The book by the way is an excellent resource with period pictures in black and white and uniforms and uniform items all in color. |

ok – yeah I looked it up. I know which one you mean. I have the Shilito(?) book, and the Osprey. That one and the Lazlo Bekasi book are on my "To Get" list
someday. You may be right on the Petty officers. |
