No spoilers, so don't worry that I'll give anything away. Saw it this evening, and loved it. 8 or 9 out of 10 for me. (Then again, any movie with a pirate in it automatically gets at least a 6 from me. Hah) 2-1/2 hours long, but I only thought it dragged in a few spots. There's a lot of story in that 2-1/2 hours. I didn't mind Elizabeth being a sword-slinger in this one. She does say at one point, "Will taught me to use a sword," by way of explanation, and her character definitely lends itself more to action than fainting. (Sue me, I like Catherine Zeta-Jones in the Zorro movies, too. Heh!) Everyone else looks like they're having fun. Bill Nighy is great as Davy Jones (but Barbossa still gets the edge because you can see more of his face). Jones's crew is a work of art. I don't think it's giving too much away to say they're all based on sea life – Jones is octopoid, and there's a hammerhead, hermit crab, coral, shrimp, and so on. If you liked the skeletal pirates in the first movie, you'll like these guys, too. They reminded me a lot of the old animalistic Citadel Beastmen from the 80s – here's hoping one of our mini companies provides some look-alikes for these guys sooner rather than later. (And here I was thinking I had more than enough pirates of all shapes, sizes, genders, races, and states of being
) The Kraken reminded me of the beastie in "Deep Rising", but with better CGI. There are several set-pieces, and I liked them all. The waterwheel fight is great, reminiscent of some of the fights in the Richard Lester Musketeer films of the 70s. Lots of ideas for pirate crews, ships, and scenery. We also get to see Tortuga again. The only fly in the ointment is the fact that this is obviously the second film in a trilogy. There are some ends left loose. I suspect that when the final film comes out next May, and you can watch this one and that one back-to-back, the experience will be more sublime. Bottom line, if you like pirate films, you'll like the movie. And if you like pirate gaming, you'll be inspired. |

If I had not woken up with a really bad cold, ear ache and fever, I would have stood in the rain to see it as well. Glad to hear it is well worth it. I will definitely see it. CC |
| jpattern2 | 07 Jul 2006 8:48 p.m. PST |
Sorry to hear that, CC. Get well soon. Oh, and my local cinema sold out every single showing of every screen today, including the late-night ones. I haven't seen that in a long time. Arrrh! |
| Neotacha | 07 Jul 2006 9:17 p.m. PST |
It was a fun flick. Kiera Knightly does that annoyed face very well, and Depp made a wonderfully quirky Sparrow. Nice to see some familiar faces in the crew, as well. Remember to sit all the way through the credits for another bonus scene! |
| bandit86 | 07 Jul 2006 9:19 p.m. PST |
It was just ok for me. Too many new characters and special effect (which are great but take away from the movie) little or no plot. But stay till the credits are over there is a small bit at the end. Depp goes one more step above his prancing Capt'n Jack act, Will looks lost and Kira Knightly, well what can you say Yummmm. All in all 6 out of 10 |

Saw it last night. Excellent fun all the way. The crew of the Dutchman are indeed a work of art. |

saw it today 3 thumbs up from me. The only bummer was I missed the first episode of the new season of Dr Who and the bonus scene of the movie. dammit dammit dammit! |
| Andrew May1 | 08 Jul 2006 6:28 a.m. PST |
Going to see it tonight, can't wait! Thank you Neotacha, I'll remember to sit through the credits for the extra scene! Cheers, Ace |
| mandt2 | 08 Jul 2006 6:45 a.m. PST |
It was a bit too long. A number of scenes were stretched, and one or two, the one with the fruit for example, were not only long, but unneccessary. I found that the film tended to drag a little whenever Depp or to a lesser degree, Knightly were not on the screen. However, the film ties seamlessly to the first one, the stars' performances pick up right where they left off, and some of the characters have evolved nicely—in a couple of cases unexpectedly. The cliffhanger ending is perfect. All in all I liked it a lot and am going to go see it again. |

Yes, thank you for the "heads up" on the bonus scene at the end of the credits, Neotacha! More and more movies seem to be doing that these days
|
| mweaver | 08 Jul 2006 7:26 a.m. PST |
I really enjoyed it. I think we will probably see it on the big screen again (unusual for us since Neotacha generally does not like going to the theater to see films). |
| InconvenientQuestions | 08 Jul 2006 9:16 a.m. PST |
Doesn't Davy Jones remind you of and avatar of Chthulu? |
| Cacique Caribe | 08 Jul 2006 11:05 a.m. PST |
Didn't they do an after-credits bonus scene at the end of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl", where Jack (the monkey, not Johnyy Depp) goes back to the chest and steals one of the coins, leading everyone to believe that the curse was back on? Or did I imagine it? Or am I imagining that I am typing this right now? I think I need to take more Nyquil and get back to bed. CC |

Loved it! I did find it hard to get into at first, probably because the novelty of Depp's character and all was worn off, and I agree it dragged a bit in places, but I left the theatre with a big smile. Special effects and those davy Jones fellows were beautifully done. Worthe seeing just for that. Wow. I realize it's entertainment, but I did groan at one scene where a ship's bow chasers were actually three rotating cannons. |
John the OFM | 08 Jul 2006 12:32 p.m. PST |
I will see it tomorrow. I will go expecting to be entertiained. |
| Neotacha | 08 Jul 2006 12:37 p.m. PST |
Yes, CC, they did. I liked the rotating cannon. Looked cool, even if it is a bit of a silly premise. They did a very nice job with Davy Jones' crew. Very nice. As were the wonderful cannibals. Weaver and I are dedicated credits readers. I can think of no better place to fine names for fantasy characters. When we go again, I will be sure to write some of the better ones down, lest I forget them again. |
| Cosmic Reset | 08 Jul 2006 1:29 p.m. PST |
Just got back from seeing it, a very good time. Liked the first one a little more though. I just enjoyed the more "human" pirates a little more than the "fishy" ones. I thought the rotating guns were cool (and silly). Now I'm off to the basement to sketch some terrain ideas from the movie. |
| jpattern | 08 Jul 2006 2:34 p.m. PST |
I thought it wasn't Jack, it was the *monkey* that stole a coin at the end of the first movie, which is why the monkey couldn't be killed in Pirates II. I thought the after-the-credits scene in II was cute, but not as good as the monkey in I. Then again, maybe the scene at the end of II presages some big doings in III

Whats the end of credits scene please? I don't want to sit through it again. |
| jpattern | 08 Jul 2006 5:08 p.m. PST |
CC: I didn't notice as many good quotes in this one, and the ones there were tended to be repeats. Jack says "Pirate," at one point, as well as "I deserved that." |
| jpattern | 08 Jul 2006 5:09 p.m. PST |
Azanti: I'll post it in a separate "Spoilers" thread, for those who want to see for themselves. |

. |
| CaseyNOVA | 08 Jul 2006 5:41 p.m. PST |
It was a very cool film. Davy Jonse's crew looked great. It was one of the best retellings of The Empire Strikes Back that I've ever seen as well. |
| Steve Hazuka | 08 Jul 2006 5:51 p.m. PST |
My wife and I loved the movie. We enjoyed the comedy and the fight scenes and the special effects. I'd rate it 8:10 and can't wait for #3 to come out. Seems Orlando is getting good at these trilogy movies huh? |
| jpattern | 08 Jul 2006 6:01 p.m. PST |
What was the spoiler, Tim? Everything I posted was in one preview or another that I saw, or in reviews I read, and I didn't give away any plot points. If I ruined anyone's enjoyment of the movie, my apologies. |
| Neotacha | 08 Jul 2006 7:54 p.m. PST |
Don't tell him here, Tim. Go to the spoiler thread. What was said here is not enough to really act as a spoiler, as it's open to interpretation. |
| jpattern | 09 Jul 2006 6:01 p.m. PST |
Never mind, I figured out which comment Tim was referring to. If it matters, I intended the non-spoiler interpretation. Heh! |

"Did they have funny quotes like: Barbossa: Why thank ye, Jack. Jack Sparrow: You're welcome. Barbossa: Oh, not you. We named the monkey Jack." They had some good lines yes, but not so many IMO. The one about 'the moments in life where you have toe chance to do some good' is excellent (I won't give up the punchline/reposte). Agree entirely about it suffering from being the 2nd of 3. In fact, IMO, while it's well worth watching, it is not in the same league as P1. (I almost said 'it's not a patch on
' but thought better of it.) Just my 2 dubloons worth. |

O.k.—I guess I'm the spoil sport here. I thought the movie was so-so. Here's why
The "little person" (midget)—what was the point? He didn't really add anything of note to the movie, why did they have him in at all? Pintel & Ragetti—again, why? They didn't really contribute anything to the plot. They were like the buccaneer version of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern but not nearly as smooth and funny as Gary Oldman and Tim Roth. Ogilvey (the "Hammerhead" Flying Dutchman crew)—they went and put a Jar-Jar Binks character into an already overstuffed plot. 'Nuff said. There were some brilliant one-liners "How's this for payment? ::BANG!:: An undead monkey!" but there was just too much going on to hold a really good story together. The fight scene on the waterwheel? ::chuckle:: I wanted character/story development. How did the Flying Dutchman come to get its "submarine" ability? What caused Davey Jones to turn into Cthulu? Shouldn't he just have been a soggy cracker from being in the depths for so long? Too many loose ends for me. Still, I'll probably buy the DVD when it comes out. ;-}~ |
Dances With Words | 10 Jul 2006 2:21 a.m. PST |
We're going to go see the movie
(and stay thru the end)
and will get the DVD when it comes out of course! (with all the bonus features, etc)
heck, we even get the 'official ceral' with marshmellow treasure chests??? Best news is that in III, they will finally get Keith Richardson to play Captain Jack's father..(since Depp based his 'mannerisms' on Keith R anyway)
which should be a 'hoot'. Davey Jones as Cthullu??? Well, they already made a 'monkee' out of him
so why not a Elder God with a side-job as part-time pirate???? What about the 50 Fathoms figures for some of the 'crew' of Flying Dutchman
they even have a crab-thing??? and 'octalons'??? Carpe' Tentacle'um
the other hard to trim beard substitute

I was lucky to see it the first day it came out! I loved it! What were to happen if someone did an army for them? |

"Didn't they do an after-credits bonus scene at the end of "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl", where Jack (the monkey, not Johnyy Depp) goes back to the chest and steals one of the coins, leading everyone to believe that the curse was back on?" I guess that would explain why the monkey is still undead, along with a couple of other little points (which I won't mention but those who have seen it will know about), though why then isn't Cap'n Jack, and the others skeletal in moonlight? I'm sure Cap'n Jack, the two comic buffoons and others would have noticed if they were still immortal, looked like skeletons in moonlight and had no feelings. Good movie, and good on it for making a bundle, but unless there is some serious exposition in vol 3, there are some el-biggo plot gaps in this one compared to #1. |
| brain in a jar | 10 Jul 2006 7:12 p.m. PST |
Because they'd all made the blood sacrifice and returned the treasure. The treasure was whole, every piece returned and the curse broken. Then the monkey came and stole some of the treasure by himself, so he alone was affected. |
| mweaver | 10 Jul 2006 7:51 p.m. PST |
That is how I read the curse working in this one, brain in a jar (are you an abbey-somebody brain?). I think there are some good lines in this one – I think as more of us go back and see it again we will pick up on more of them. I can think of three or four I liked in this one from just one viewing, but since some people may be reading this thread who haven's seen it yet, I will refrain. Two of my favorite lines involved the monkey. |
