This time, the defenders are not Victorians or Moderns like in the previous thread:
TMP link

Instead, this is what I am thinking of for the defenders (near-future crew of about 20 or so):

And instead of dinos, these are some of the animals to contend with:

QUESTIONS:
Would the defenses be physical barriers or force fields?

By the way, who makes decent-looking force field posts?

Thanks.

You might get some suitable pieces for force-field posts from GW's 40K MacCragge [sp.?] set. A fair number of 40K players probably have extras …

Cheers,

I wish they had a close-up of those posts (and a separate listing too):

Sorry I didn't see your original thread, have you got all your explorers yet? if not might I suggest my Dick garrison and Felicity figures for your party, the costumes are quite like the lost in space ones on the link,

also Steve barber do some very nice prehistoric beasts,

the GW shield post are very nice but as an alternative sone small buttons threaded over an upright piece of wire might work just as well.

Cheers Roger.

People are Ebaying the MacCragge components all the time.

I'd use a longish roofing nail, paint wood bits from Hobby Lobby or such, sink them onto the nail (make sure to get bits with holes in them), and glue these around the perimeter. Paint as needed to rep field emitters in your game world.

Crusoe the Painter15 Jun 2006 2:18 p.m. PST

Maginot like forts would work well I'd think. :)

Chupacabras15 Jun 2006 4:18 p.m. PST

A plasticine fort?

Cacique Caribe15 Jun 2006 4:42 p.m. PST

These look neat:

But I think I would still place a force field around the outer perimeter, some distance from the actual walls.

What do you think?

I guess that, depending on the location, a metal mesh or net would be needed to keep things like this out:

This is too pricey. It might be easier to make them from scratch.

"I wish they had a close-up of those posts (and a separate listing too):"

battlewagon bits may have those.

Cacique Caribe16 Jun 2006 10:37 a.m. PST

Farstar,

Thanks for the suggestion!!! I always forget about Battlewagon.

Unfortunately, they are out of stock:

The plus side is that I now have an idea of what GW might actually call them: "Laser Fence Barricades".

CC and Farstar, here is a close-up of the Mongoose "Bug-zappers", if it of any help for reference-

O.K.!!It's a piece of clothing the Police used.

The bug strikes again!!!

The GW Macragge posts are officially called "Magna Power Field Projectors":

The Mongoose ones are called "Stalwart Bug Field Generators" and, as Roberto says, they are too pricey for just 4 of them:

How will they keep the cave men from digging under the enclosure? Thank you.

I like this idea, even though I would probably erect it over land:

Would you not prefer a time traveler <<fort>> that could be installed and taken down to prevent future generations from finding it? Thank you.

Cacique Caribe06 Jul 2006 12:21 p.m. PST

Roberto,

I guess that is why I initially thought of a force field that could be installed and removed with less effort and that would not leave too much of a footprint.

Robin Bobcat08 Jul 2006 11:02 a.m. PST

Force Field walls are easy to make. Get some thin-ish brass wire, something that won't bend easily, and thread some cheap beads on them. Round one at the tip, couple 'flanges' for insulators, just so it has that nice, retro 'electrical fence' look.

Cacique Caribe08 Jul 2006 5:03 p.m. PST

I think I am going to raid my niece's jewelry beads stash. Thanks.

You really want to test yer fort, try setting an *Entelodont* pack on the garrison…>;D

This topic is dealt with in Michael Chrichton's book, Congo.

The explorers are in the Congo (not surprisingly) and they need protection against large megafauna. Solution:

Laser tripwires that activate large machine guns. There were some threads a while back about the new "area exclusion" systems that are being built to replace mine fields – they use rapid fire grenade launchers to fire at anything that trips the boundary sensors.

Sentry Guns… Firing caseless projectiles (no Brass to police up)…

I guess if the travelers collapsed this baby before returning to their time . . .

BlackWidowPilot Fezian27 Oct 2006 9:28 p.m. PST

He was messing around in our family's *Entelodont* pen again! I keep telling CC that an Entelodont is NOT just another "cute lil' ole' piggie," but he just doesn't listen…>;D

Thank God he had a good insurance plan… evil grin

Welcome to MY CLUB!! Aggh!! It nearly *punched my ticket* – TWICE IN EIGHT DAYS!- and gave me a 54-day stint in the hospital thanks to the docs *missing* the *INTESTINAL BLIND SPOT.* Thank God my Better Half – Sandra- stayed up all night after a week of being told I was *dying* and did her own research on the disease, then asked the chief surgeon about said blindspot! Look on said Chief Surgeon's face: PRICELESS!! evil grin

Eleventh hour surgery and a follow-up procedure a year later and I'm alive today to wish you a very speedy recovery! Enjoy your painting time to the fullest! evil grin

Cheers!

Incredibly simple idea here . . .

*sigh*

You could pick up a sheet of tin that has been stamped or some plasticard and spray paint it metalic silver.

Smokey Roan24 Apr 2007 1:46 p.m. PST

(silver spray paint) Thats what I was thinking. That is very nice work, Daniel!!

Cacique Caribe27 Apr 2007 11:21 a.m. PST

As others have pointed out to me a few times, these would work nicely:

Previous question about SST fort:

Question:

Don't elephants avoid crossing ditches that are deeper than their trunks can reach?

If so, do you think that would keep at least the Mammoths from crossing into the fort?

CC

Cacique Caribe07 Aug 2008 7:46 p.m. PST

Now, for these heavy guys at full gallop, I dunno what could keep them out . . .

CC: Most animals will not try to get across a barrier that they can't see the other side of. You see this at zoos all the time, where there are gazelles and such that could easily clear the distance of the ditch's width, but because they can't see the other side of the barrier, they won't go over it without a REALLY good reason – like a hungry predator coming at them.
