I must say, when chaos0xomega posted that Norman fort, I looked at the entire compound and missed the most important aspect applicable to this topic . . . the "motte" (wooden fort above conical hill): picture Look at these and then imagine that, instead of a tower, there's a net and that dinosaurs are trying to reach the defenses: link picture picture CC |

There is, of course, method to all this madness . . . TMP link CC |

Well, actually, whatever you build is automatically dinosaur proof since you simply declare it so. So make up a fort that you like the looks of and don't let any dino's in. |

"Then again, your average meat eating dinosaur may lack the innocence of a love-struck ape
Perish the thought a dino may actually consume her! Not cricket Old Boy, it just ISN'T done." erm.. are we speakiong of the delightful Miss Haversham, or me Mother-in-law..? |

For a modern one, we can't forget to lay in a goodly supply of claymore mines. That should take care of the littler dinos, stuff up to deinonychus (what, 6' long or so?) Then you can plant anti-tank mines, if you like. Should work for multi-ton dino feet. For aerial threats, how about barrage balloons, kitted out with razor wire instead of a huge net? Pteros having such large wingspans, this should definitely discourage them rather quickly. And balloons are easy to transport when not inflated, though the hydrogen or helium to inflate them is a bit bulky. Maybe crack the H2 from some H2O? This one works for both modern and Victorian era. |

For a Victorain stockade try this (scroll down to VSF28): link picture Dave |

Hmmm. I guess that Victorians could use bones, particularly if they were stuck having to defend a position close to a lot of dino remains. CC |

I think it would be better to drive the dinosaur away rather than killing after all what would you do with a huge many ton dead dino? and the carcas would only attract more hungry dinosaurs. So My solution would be fire. |

Hmm. Maybe the time has finally come for me to try this with Pirates. Yes, pirates!!! TMP link CC |

Well I recon that the reason that the fortified manor houses on Mars were designed the way they were was to keep the Dinosaurs out

Well, if I have to give up playing 28mm because of serious space limitations and start doing 15mm . . . And if I can't find good 15mm Victorians for a Lost World adventure game . . . Then a PVD (Pirates vs Dinosaurs) game with 15mm might still be a viable option, right? TMP link TMP link TMP link What do you people think? CC |

I think dinosaurs were probably much like modern predators. They don't automatically hurl themselves to their deaths at anything new. Lions, for example, will not attack people inside tents. They view the tent as an object. I would think the best place to build would be on a flat bit of land largely surrounded by steep scree slopes. You can eventually blast the tongue of land connecting your camp to the outside world and build a draw bridge of some sort. Palisade and whatnot round camp, chevaux de frise and fires on the approach. The fires mught well be enough for most dinos actually, I never met one. Mount a couple of 1pdr pom pom or 40mil auto grenade launchers on platforms to each side, machine guns at intervals on the wall. Substantial log rooves on cabins with inset heavy doors, small windows
and away you go. Pump action shotguns for all personnel. If you have overhead cover then flying dinosaurs are little danger. Pretty ungainly once they land and they risk hitting buildings if they swoop. When do you set off? |

I know that this was done for a Vietnam game but, if you imagine it without any buildings or vehicles, I think it could inspire a fantastic Lost World gaming table: link link Don't you think? I really like that tall cork bark mountain. Dan |

Presumably you will have to run regular patrols throught your compound to make sure you get rid of the small (large dog size or smaller) dinos taht get in and chew through your vital cables etc etc. |
