I recently was bit by the 1/300 scale aircraft game White star/Blue Sky. What I'm thinking about doing is a Battle of Britain compaign. Something along the lines of the British players will each be assigned a squadron in Group 11. They will start out with 12 aircraft and 18 pilots.
The German's will be assigned to Luft II and will be assigned one fighter squadron and one bomber squadron. The Brits get more points for shooting down bombers than fighters. The germans get points for bombing targets and shooting down fighters. So when we play a game each player that shows up will select which fighters/pilots from their squadron they are going to use. For germans they will have to have a 2/1 fighter/bomber unit ratio. Pilots the survive and shoot down enemy planes will get exp. to raise their abilities in the game. I've found some really good webpages on the Battle of Britain out there but wondered if you folks might know of some more?? Also anyone else who has done something similar please post the whats and hows so I can learn from you. Thanks
Rusty

First off,go join the yahoo group Blueskies-L for more info on the game,as there may be some ideas already listed there. Also next up is an early war supplement coming out,IIRC contains BoB in it.Last, try and find a copy of Squadrons BoB rules which was the precursor to Blue Skies (same system and author;check ebay or ask at the yahoo group.

Good hunting!

sound like a good idea, maybe you could share your links.

On my own I was thinking of doing so with Scramble. I don't like hex gaming tables ;)

If anyone is missing this child, please come to the lost and found . . .

Look at what I found in the "Opposing Scales: On Purpose?" thread . . . crazy bug!

"You guys have heard the joke about Osama going to heaven and seeing George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, etc. He asks God who are these guys and God says these are your 72(77?) Virginians. Osama says: Oh! I thought you said Virgins!

That's the Virginians reference…

Yes, any death is terrible, but to remove a person responsible for so many deaths, IMO, is a good thing."

Hey,

That is not my post! Mine disappeared into the ether…..

Still suffering from this bug I see.

What I originally posted was that QRF produces a set of rules called Duel of Eagles, which doesn't require a hexmat, but that permits 3-D movement, which in my opinion is absolutely required for the BoB, due to the need to climb to the appropriate altitude levels to intercept enemy aircraft.

There is a brief one-page mini-campaign guide included in the rules, which provides info for handling pilot bailouts, aircraft survival on landing if damaged, pilot and aircraft replacements, etc. It would be a decent place to start for a campaign, and is very simple to use.

I highly recommend the rules, since they are very playable, and yet give a reasonable, historical result.

When fighting bombers though, especially in formation, you may need to reduce their defensive fire stats, since they are a bit overly lethal for single-gun, hand-held, rifle-caliber weapons.

I'm playing a game right now with my son, with 6 x Wildcats vs. 6 x Zeroes. He always manages to shoot down my ace (each side has one), which is rather annoying, so it is now 5:6, but three Wildcats are converging on one of his aircraft, so that pilot may not survive, unless he is very lucky. Both sides have suffered some additional damage, with the Americans getting the worst of it so far. Hopefully that will change soon, since we are now positioned better for the engagement.

1/300th scale aircraft look wonderful on the tabletop. You might also consider the 1/600th scale Tumbling Dice aircraft as well, especially if you want more room for your formations to maneuver, without being stacked on top of one another. Large units in this scale look great.

Wow, 6 on 6. Good to see you are enjoying them. Got any photos?? :-)

Double Ace10 Jun 2006 9:49 a.m. PST

Sorry Geoff, no decent pics, since the USN aircraft still need markings, and they are in 1/600th scale, but it is still fun nonetheless.

We do initiative by flight/shotai, until the shooting starts, and then pilots are free to move individually, which helps speed the early part of the game up.

We also assume everyone has spotted one another, since getting bounced and not being able to shoot back is no fun for the bouncee.

Sometimes we do use spotting by groups, for larger games, e.g. those including escorts and bombers.
