Hi all My little group is looking for something with a little more detail and specific period flavour, and I was wondering whether anyone would care to share about other rule sets out there (eg Principles of War etc – of which I know nothing). Thanks, Paul. |

Do try "regiment of foote" by Peter Pig. There is a link on the PP website to a battle report at Kev's Uses about 6 foot units and 4 cav uniots per side. Game is generated through a campaign booklet included in the rulres Martin |

I have heard good things about Regiment of Foote, but have not tried it yet. I would also recomend Forlorn Hope. Lots of period flavour, colour flags, uniform notes, etc. Also the ECW scenario book series from Caliver is well worth a look, what ever rules you play. |

I have played EDW games for years and in 15mm for last ten. Regiment of Foote by Peter Pig are superb if you want a nice game between gentlemen and works really well for depiction of smaller battles perhaps set at the county level. Forlorn Hope is a fantastic set of rules for the ECW. It faithfully depicts the advantages of the early royalist armies compared with the parleamentarians but perhaps too faithfully as it is extremely difficult to win if you are a rebel! My current favourites are a free to download set from The Perfect Captain called Very Civile Actions. paul |

Since DBR has the smoothest, fastest mechanics you might want to consider adding the period flavor and details yourself. I did and I'm very happy with the result. |

Thanks for the suggestions gents, much obliged. Regiment of Foote might well be the one
and since I have been promising myself some more WOTR figures it is another good reason to visit PP's site :) Thanks also for the VCA suggestion, Paul – I really liked the cards as well. |

I think that Principles of War works well for the ECW and I know that some of the guys in my club have been using a variant of Warmaster Ancients for that period and it seems to be working really well. Duncan |

Forlorn Hope are a very good set that I have played for several years. They give a good period feel for ECW – much better than DBR which I never felt worked for 17th century games. Mike |

armati, i found forlorn hope too deep and long winded, played the same games with armait with the odd add on for the ECW period. great games , lots of figures all within 2 hours, and also good for WOTR. |

Depends on what scale of figure you want to play with. If it is 15mm or 25mm then Forlorn Hope without a shadow of a doubt. If it is 6mm then Polemos ECW. Written by the same guy, Pete Berry of Bacchus, both sets reek of period flavour – nothing else (ok, maybe 1644 in bits) comes even close. |

Decisions, decisions
thanks all, plenty to think about there. I am not scared of reasonably complex rules, but I'd prefer not to have to wrestle with something like Tercio again (shudder). Similarly, I do like DBR, and have no problem with using it for 16th century battles (Go Swiss!) but the ECW battles we have fought with it left us a little flat. I can't explain it any better than that, just thought it was time to explore other possibilities. Cheers, Paul. |

Paul, We had the same problem with DBR – it works well for 16th century games, but doesn't give you the feel of the mixed units for ECW. Mike |
