link link link I think it would be interesting even if only for the multiple clashes of cultures with various technologies. But, could it be gamed? Maybe as a "skirmish" campaign of some sort? Any suggestions? CC |

Make it a race, couple of egyptian princes, phoenecians, what have you. Have to pick spots to water and camp (BIG factor for galleys) — let opponents control random hostile natives. Might try to waylay each other, pay natives to ambust opposition, etc. Whoever gets back firstest with mostest wins. |

Herodotus: "The Phoenicians sailed from the Arabian gulf into the southern ocean, and every autumn put in at some convenient spot on the Libyan coast, sowed a patch of ground, and waited for next year's harvest. Then, having got in their grain, they put to sea again, and after two full years rounded the Pillars of Heracles in the course of the third, and returned to Egypt." This means three long term camps, but there must have been many short term ones in between too. This would require, at the very least, 7th century Phonenician sailors/marines, Egyptians officials and guards, Nubians, very low tech African natives, Carthaginians and Greeks (as they round the north of Africa) . . . am I missing anyone? " If this happened around 600 BCE, how about a run with Arab and Assyro-babylonian pirates/traders soon after they set out in the Red Sea. Once out of the Red Sea, just to make it interesting, throw in the remote possibility of encountering Indian pirates/traders, or even some Chinese pirates/traders. Then, as they are about to reach South Africa, have them encounter a lost Hebrew mining outpost with their troops and settlers. Just a thought. |

Wow. This is getting even better than I thought! Now the big question. How to play all of this out in a game? Can it even be done? CC |

The coast of sub-Saharan Africa was *far* less populous than in later centuries. It was probably not a very exciting trip! Allen |

Allen, Could the precursor nations of these African kingdoms have been around at that time (see map)? link CC |

Probably not, except for perhaps in the Bantu "homeland". These kingdoms generally did not arise for anothe thousand years as a result of Bantu migration: link That's not to say that fantastic elements couldn't be introduced. Allen |

They`ve got a long way to go, you don't want it too crowded. |
