I have a copy of The Painter's Guide to World War Two Naval Camouflage. Unfortunately the color references there, and on most online sites, are to colors other than Vallejo. I've found the Cybermodeler site which has a table with some USN colors for Vallejo, but it's a bit spotty, seems contradictory, and relies on a mix of Model Color and Model Air. I know I can easily get the right paints by going with Floquil or WEM, but I like Vallejo Model Color, and I'd like to stick with that. So, has anyone work out evuivalencies for the USN and RN colors given in TPGtWW2NC? I'm okay with mixing reasonable proportions. Any help is appreciated. |

The following link has the Federal Standard #'s for USN WW2 colors. Vallejo maintains an "equivalencies" document on their site that matchs all colors to the Federal Standard #. link |

Dave, Are these the same as the pdf list that I found on the Wizard.com website? If you are the author, Vallejo is trying to contact you. |

Winged Hussar: while I'm sure that there are plenty of Vallejo colors that aren't far off, I doubt that they're exact to the USN paints. Close enough, maybe. If Vallejo went in the direction of putting their professional reputation on the line saying that they did all the major naval colors, then I'd buy'em. I'm busy trying to get this figured out myself, and I'm ending up with a mish-mash of Floquil, Polly-S, ModelMaster, Tamiya, and White Ensign due to discontinuations and stocking issues. |

Be advised that there are no FS equivalents for WW2 USN colors (FS did not come into use until the 1950s) and certainly not for RN colors (which are matched to BS--British Standard). |

Tearing my hair out on this and these links no longer work. Vallejo Paints 20-B – Deck Blue – 867 Dark Blue Gray 5-H – Haze Gray '43- 905 Blue Grey Pale 5-H – Haze Gray '44- 870 Medium Sea Grey 5-N – Navy Blue '43- 816 Luftwaffe Uniform 5-N – Navy Blue '44- 862 Black Grey 5-L – Light Gray – 989 Sky Gray (or 1:1 989 + 883 Silver Gray) 5-O – Ocean Gray '43- 1:1:1 902 Azure + 973 Light Sea Grey + 951 White 5-O – Ocean Gray '44- 991 Dark Sea Grey 5-P – Pale Gray – 1:1 907 Pale Grey Blue + 951 White Problem with this is mainly the '43 5-O I came up with. That color is very close to a lightish bluish colors I've seen on tons and tons of Essex class models but I've not seen the color used anywhere else and 5-0 used on any other ship at any other time never looks even remotely blue to me. I'm looking for difinitive answers here. I'm pretty much just about to give up and do my fleet in measure 22 because it's stupidly easy to do. Measure 22 two-tone: 5-N (816) from waterline to deepest part of main deck, 5-H (905) above, deck Deck Blue 20B (867 or 900). |
