I can't say about Allmand, but Sumption books are really goods narratives of the first part of HYW. I would recommend you, specially if you want a military and political approach to the events more than thorough social or economical analysis.

Parts 1 and 2 of Sumption's HYW are quite excellent from a wargamer's perspective. Part 3 is still some way off (i.e. years) and may never come out.

I already had Sumptions Vol2 in paperback and was pleased with it. I just got Vol1 from my local library and I have to say that I am disappointed with the maps and plans. They look as though they were printed on a photocopier just as the toner was about to run out – i.e. rather faded – and this makes them hard to read, espescially with my 60 year old eyes. The maps and plans in Vol2 are much clearer.

A curious crosspost between WW2 discussion and medieval books :)

Got vol 3 of Sumption from Amazon a week ago £28.00 GBP Best history of the HYW ever but couldn't finish his book on the Albigensian Crusade for some reason.

Yep, it's in Waterstones as I type. Hardback only at the moment though….

Cheers,

Darrell.
