Samuel Eliot Morison's book in his History of NAval Operations in World War 2. It is the official history from the uS Navy. Not only is he a Harvard history professor, he was an admiral in the Naval Reserve during the war. He is kind of, sort of qualified, and a great writer to boot. link Now in paperback, at $9.95. Wow. I didn't know that

I suggest "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors" by James D. Hornfischer (ISBN 0-553-80257-7). It provides an overview of the entire naval campaign with a focus on the details of the action between the Taffy 3 flotilla and the IJN Northern Group. It's the best description I've read of this action (which is simply an incredible tale no matter how many times I read about it). Many years ago a coworker read Mitchner's "Space" where a major character was a naval commander in WWII. He asked me if I knew anything about this fantastic WWII naval battle described in it. Turned out to be the Taffy 3 story. He was surprised it was for real as he was convinced anything that dramatic HAD to be fiction. I later read "Space" and Mitchner did do an excellent job of summarizing the fight. |

I'd second the recommendations for Morison and Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors. I'd also recommend "The Battle of Leyte Gulf" by H.P. Wilmott. It goes into great detail about the planning for the battle from both sides and the rationales for the actions taken. In particular, it addresses in depth Halsey's decision not to block the San Bernadino Strait and Kurita's decision to turn away just before closing on the carriers at the Battle Off Samar. |
