I like their flock of sheep.

I find the translation process to be interesting. Churchill translates English "reserves" as "mass de manoeuvre," which sounds more like a strike force to be used in response to enemy action than a bunch of guys used to fill a hole in the line.

Here, translating from the Russian, my translation program used the word "raid" where we would use "bombardment" in English. "Raid" in English implies sudden, swift, unexpected. I guess these words could all apply to a mortar or artillery bombardment. The Cambridge Dictionary defines "bombardment" as: "a continuous attack on a place with guns or bombs." We might be expecting different things from our artillery than the Russians expect from theirs.
