Trying to identify the nationality a figure is meant to represent. He is a standard bearer carrying a large fish on a pole. Dressed in mail and trousers, a helmet with cheek pieces that has a bird on top. I thought Dacian, by the fish standard but the owl/crow on his hat speaks of Viking. The Figure is 15/18mm. Any help would be appreciated. Manufacturer, catalogue number and designer is above and beyond (Joke). Cant see how to upload a picture.

Sorry. For me, the obvious answer is a sandwich bag and a price sticker at the next flea market. Even if you figured out what they are, how many more would you need?

"Fish" standard atop a pole, wearing mail and an open-faced helmet suggests Carolingian to me, with a "Draco"-type standard:

I thought Dacian, by the fish standard but the owl/crow on his hat speaks of Viking.

To my knowledge Vikings did not use Draco standards ("fish on a pole") but Saxons did.

I am not aware of Vikings using bird decorations on their helmets either – that would make me rather think of ancient Celts.

After a bit of searching, I found a mention of actual ancient helmet with bird decoration on top, excavated from Romania:

So maybe your figures are Dacians after all?

I'm traveling so can't look it up…but sounds like one of the old thistle and rose line. Back next week if need to look

You cant upload pics to TMP. Instead you can post a link to a third party site where you have uploaded the picture. Then place the url link to the picture on a TMP thread inside brackets with the IMG then /IMG commands, and Robert is your mother's brother.

The winged helmet was also (mistakenly?) illustrated in the Osprey "Gallic & British Celts" book.

Thanx, Kutnetsov, It's not a bird with spread wings its roosting.

Thanx Parzival. But I didn't understand a word, sorry. Where do I find a third party website that will let me load a pic on it??

Wally71501 Dec 2025 8:25 a.m. PST

I did find a video with an anglo saxon with Draco Standard. Not armoured but it might be Saxon/Fran/Carolingian they all com from the same stock?? Thanx for your comments and helps. I might just paint one and put it on the table anyway.
