Earlier this month on a short trip to Stockholm I got to visit the Vasa Museum, home to the most complete 17th century warship in the world, and in a remarkable state of preservation despite 333 years on the seabed before she was raised and put on public display in 1961.

In this first post looking at the time capsule this vessel is, built when the Thirty Years War was setting Europe aflame and heralding the rise of one of the great captains, 'The Lion of the North', King of Sweden, Gustavus Adolphus, I focus on a walk around the preserved hull and look at the discovery and raising of the ship, and in Part Two will look at the artefacts and remains of the crew that were discovered in and around the wreck during and after her recovery.

I saw the Vasa on a school trip back in '61. It was still being sprayed to keep it from drying out to quickly.

It is a fantastic exhibit and museum and well worth a visit if you are in Stockholm. As is the rest of Stockholm. A very pretty city with lots of museums … the army museum is also worth going to. I really enjoyed my week there.

If you take your partner there is also the Ikea Museum / Shop as well. 😁
