This site civilwartalk.com (sadly not online at the moment) had a thread "Colors of the Ironclads and Gunboats: What is Known" Discussion in 'Civil War History – The Naval War' started by Mad Hungarian, Mar 17, 2015. which suggested:

"USS Queen of the West: Overall white, with contrasting bands of black. Hull was black. Her identification letter, "Q", may have been painted blue."

"USS Tyler: Lower hull was light grey/lead grey. Upper hull , wheels, bulwark, and roofing were medium or charcoal grey. Pilot house and decking light grey. In one illustration that I found, the gun hatches were a lead grey color. I thought that contrasted nicely, so went with that look, though I can't say for certain that was the period approach."

Sumter wasn't included.

I have spent 60 years just assuming that they were all painted black. It is nice to learn something new.

USS Sumter was a captured Confederate cotton clad ram.

CSS General Sumter started life as a towboat and in 1861 was converted to a cotton clad ram (ram was 4" of hardwood and 1" of iron). She fought in the defense of Ft. Pillow and in 1862 the Battle of Memphis where she was damaged by gun fire, run aground and abandoned.

She was re-floated and renamed USS Sumter and armed with a 9" Smoothbore while still keeping the ram.

But, to answer your question, the superstructure was painted white.

Rear Admiral Walker loved the Tyler and painted a picture of it with a red hull, and black and white horizontal stripes at the gun-port level similar to the USS Constitution, with the upper bulwarks a more natural wood color. Probably was never like that, but it is a neat look.

I can't recall where the painting is displayed.
