Contrary to popular belief, approximately 50% of these troops remained loyal to the Republic and eventually adopted the more "democratic" name of Guardia Nacional Republicana (National Republican Guard). Some historians believe the Civil Guard played a decisive role in the early days of the conflict, arguing that the uprising succeeded in areas where the Guardia joined the movement and failed in territories where it remained loyal to the legitimate government…"
