A bronze statue of Confederate Gen. Albert Pike, which was toppled by demonstrators in 2020 following George Floyd's death, was reinstalled this past weekend in Washington, D.C…

Oh, goodie.
Another traitor incompetent general restored.
But at least he was a noted Freemason.

And he's my 6th cousin four times removed. grin

Well, he was known for representing the various Native American tribes in lawsuits against the federal government. He even won some of them. That complicates his history from being, "just another traitor." No, that man had a long and well documented list of grievances against the Union he chose to oppose, seeing time and again how they failed to deliver for his clients.
But he was a cruddy general, that I agree on.

I dunno. I think choosing to fight against your family, friends and neighbors is the ultimate form of treachery. As a descendent of those who walked the Trail I may see things differently than some of you. But seriously, Pike?

I am personally against the destruction and defacing of monuments and name shaming removals altogether.

Having said that, the Pike statue should be in front of a Masonic Hall, not prominently in DC. Nothing to do with his being a Confederate, but because his accomplishments had to do with being a Mason.

I guess he could be cheered as a bad commander for the Confederacy. A "J. Cornpone" so to speak. 😉

I think it is more fitting in front of some grand lodge or a Masonic home. I'd even get it if a reservation put up a statue to recognize his work on behalf of various tribes. This seems like a misfire.

I'm with 35th and 79th. History isn't all black and white. (Ouch -- NO PUN intended)

Another traitor incompetent general restored.

This quote proves that to the victors goes the spoils. Putting aside Pike's limited military service the question of whether he was a traitor is predicated on whether secession was constitutionally permittable, something that was only finally decided upon after the ACW was over (or we might say that war itself settled the matter.) This important distinction seems lost on many modern commentators.
