We all know the ultra modern stuff is down the toilet, with modern in general not far behind.

However, what was the feeling 70-80s with the various regenerations?

Perhaps Hartnell's disapproval of the second doctor started it all??

To note, I'm talking show as a whole, not just preferred doctors.

As example, 2005+ became much more rush rush, with shorter stories and little time to get to know characters of the week, not to mention political shoehorning. So on.

From my understanding 6th had it worst?

Back in the 1960 & 970s, I was not interested in watching the episodes of the First Doctor.

The H Man25 Oct 2025 7:16 p.m. PST

Was that because it was more a kids show than the later doctors?

I feel the second was about half and half.

The third more a family show, erring on James Bond with his gadgets and his girls.

The Adric era was dire, and Bonny Langford works better in modern who than she ever did in her original appearances.

Some of the old was good, some not so good. Just like with the new. That's pretty normal for any TV show.

There wasn't much else to watch on TV in the 1960s and 70s, so we didn't have a lot of choice.

I don't recall too many people writing to the Radio Times to complain about Dr Who…

Didn't take it seriously enough to have an opinion. Can't imagine why this matters to anybody.

Giles the Zog26 Oct 2025 10:19 a.m. PST

My Facebook feed has numerous complaints about earlier DR Who, one writer complaining about the violence of the Sea Devils amongst other new fangled episodes.

TimePortal26 Oct 2025 2:15 p.m. PST

Yes I remember complaints from the local hippie generation concerning DR WHO 3 close relationship with the military.

Someone has always complained about something in Doctor Who. The only difference is that personal opinions are amplified on the internet, generally in You tube echo chambers.
Industrious letter writers infamously drove John Nathan Turner crazy and voluable fans may have contributed to the BBC getting frustrated and cancelling it once temporarily and again in 1989.
There was a furore about the mystique of the Time Lords being ruined in the 4th Doctor's era.
As noted above there were views about the Doctor being too cosy with the authorities especially UNIT, though I see that more in the 2nd than the 3rd.
There were various points when issues were raised about the level of violence and its nature.

As for starting as a childrens show, yes it did, but there were some very dark elements in some of the Hartnell stories, less so in Troughton.

Doctor Who has been reportedly ruined many times in its 60 year history.

"The Adric era was dire"

It seemed to capture the vibe of the tv era, I remember.

Some good stories.

His death having one of the best twists.

Just needed the doctor to pull a Taylor.

"You maniacs!"

"Bonny Langford works better in modern who than she ever did in her original appearances."

Give her some credit.

Though she may be the closest?

"Some of the old was good, some not so good. Just like with the new. That's pretty normal for any TV show."

The modern stuff is basically built on a bad premise.

Remove all the good things about dr who and go from there.

Much like Fury Road.

Gets you unsuspecting innocents, but at a high price.

What's normal for a show is to start good, then if it goes past six seasons, fizzle out with character and story changes that don't work.

X files, sg1, so on.

I guess modern who kind of did that, if you ignore the previous three odd decades.

Obviously that's what the production was wanting to do, no regeneration, starting at season 1, again, and forgetting anything good about the show. Oh, yeah and the shoehorning of certain production staff's personal interests.

"Can't imagine why this matters to anybody."

That reminds me of Micky Rooney on a Twilight zone commentary.

Fans dude, they're called fans!

"There was a furore about the mystique of the Time Lords being ruined in the 4th Doctor's era."

That's a troupe of many shows.

At some point, the hero's eventually win or a mystery is solved.

If the show gets past it, they suddenly have to come up with something else.

Sometimes this happens because the show was likely to end or have great changes.

X files and sg1 had this type of thing happen.

The Gould were basically defeated, Jaffa wernt hard to fight any more. "I know! Ori!"

Lost was axed at six so we never saw much impact.

I don't think anyone can argue that recent who changes are not the most dramatic, or desperate, ever.

After 50+ years as a white male, suddenly two go directly against that with no precidence??

It would be nice to see a return of the wholesome family unit we saw in the first doctor.

Or the more professional approach of the third.

At least they acted like normal people.

A show for the people, not for University protest crazies.

I think things are getting straightened out from the top (pun works), so we may yet see a dramatic change.

Fingers crossed.

Children's show now run by groomers, what could go wrong?

The real question is- did the show runners of classic who hate the fans as much as the modern show runners? It used to be that if fans didn't like the way a show was going, it either changed or got cancelled. Now the show runners deride the fans and tell them ‘Don't watch it if you don't like it' amd then deride them again when viewership inevitably goes down.

I loved original Battlestar Galactica and hated Galactica 1980, as did a lot of other fans. I don't recall anyone calling me names over not liking it. Same with Buck Rogers. Wilma going from bad ass in skin tight spandex to flight attendant in a cocktail waitress dress didn't make the show better, even with Hawk added. Still, no one called me names because I thought the new direction sucked.

Now-a-days if you don't like the change, you are just a bigot. The ratings decline, but at least the garbage stays on tv as a result, I guess. Gotta stay employed, right?

"I loved original Battlestar Galactica and hated Galactica 1980, as did a lot of other fans. I don't recall anyone calling me names over not liking it."

I could.

Unfortunately today people get praise, money and position by "modernising " aka ruining things.

If people have a go at them over it, they (the people causing the problem) become an oppressed minority, which is exactly what they want.

I like RFDS, but it needs that wee chap with the spray can from Labrinth to swing by for an afternoon.

That may solve the problem.

Perhaps he could treat dr whos problems too?

The more annoying thing is how everyone is fine with some people's interests on the show, RFDS.

Not very realistic.

Not enough?

Last week some bloke lost a gas can up his…

"Come to Australia, we'll get together, have a few laughs."

"Where the … are you?" (Chick in bikini on beach, as if you need reminding…)

Running for my sanity. (Not from her, of course…)

That was one of the best ads ever, yet it got a lot of flack.

Unfortunately "a bloke in a dress" would be considered tickety boo.

"But they made a film"

"What? Port Arthur?"

For all these privileged white males supposedly getting about these days, some people sure don't want their money, views or clicks.
