Hi all,

Is there a collective name for a group of Wargamers?

My mate suggested:
An Argument
An Opinion (we all have them!)
A Magpie (we are all victim to the 'Ooh-Shiney' with new figures etc!)

Anyone else have any suggestions?

A tercio (for those high falutin' gamers)

A squad?
A gaggle?
An aroma?
A battle?

All of the above are great ideas as well. Best poll question that I have heard in a while.

"A mess

A load

A circle"

Don't read in reverse order!

Which clubs are you going to?

Are all the figures just a cover?

"A murder of crows?"

That's the plural of crows, not wargamers.

Topics are hard.

"A squabble"

More specific to TMP?

What about:

A turn?

A campaign?

A cabinet?

A war room?

A roll?

A list?

A base?

A collection?

A hobby?

A figure?

A sprue?

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP24 Oct 2025 1:42 p.m. PST

A conflict?
A faction?
An element?
A stand?
A base?
A bag?
A binder?
A codex?
An edition?

Excellent poll question!

The H Man24 Oct 2025 1:56 p.m. PST

Yes, good question.

The main elements are, miniature figures, dice, rules.

Tables, people, are not so unique and can vary.

Military formations aren't unique to wargaming.

Painting and modelling are not done by all wargamers.

Lots of types of groups have smelly, grumpy people, so those sort of things aren't helpful.

Figures, dice, rules, I feel is the unique, consistent area to focus on.

If the term then covers some military aspect or whatever also, all the better.

"A turn" covers what occurs in most games in general. Something there may work?

A U turn? No, but you get the idea.

A deployment? Just another option that sprung to mind. Or had it been suggested?

I think it will need two or three words, or similar, to be unique enough.

"A base" is good and covers no figures and paper figures and such. As you usually have at least some shape of card on the table, figures or not.

Hmm…

PS

A club?

A cast?

Again, not specific enough, to me.

As if any plural term ever is!

A gaming group….

The H Man24 Oct 2025 2:46 p.m. PST

Logic prevailed.

Works, but also for computer, card and board games.

Perhaps

A wargaming group?

Dang.

The topic question provided the answer all along!

PS

"a Pusher…"

Ever notice what colour the TMP site is?

Cerulean blue…

6. Table – on point, and somewhat understated yet elegant

5. Congress – implies conflicting sides
5. Parlaiment – implies conflicting sides

4. Synod – invokes the idea of doctrinal debate within a single faith

3. Dissonance – it sure as hell isn't a harmony of wargamers

2. Debate – we spend more time on rules than play, anyway

1. Clash – it's what we're there for, and what we do

No.

The H Man25 Oct 2025 12:58 p.m. PST

"I suggest you Google the phrase."

I suggest you google the word.

Someone who reads a lot of books, obviously has no idea what they are saying.

"A skirmish

A melee

An encounter

An ambush"

Feels like it.

A decision?

A back? As they are all hunched over tables.

A gripe?

A strategy?

PS

"Nerd Herd"

That probably better describes pop culture convention attendees.

Not all wargamers are nerds.

GWs usually seem to be punk-goth metal heads. At least when you see a line up of 90s staff.

I feel multiple words is the go though.

"Nerd Herd," while excellent, is from the TV series "Chuck." It's a parody of the Geek Squad from the electronics retailer Best Buy.

How about: A grumble.

A case?

A stagnant puddle?

A cheer?

A reroll?

A die?

A list?

A roster?

Base/figures/models, rules, dice…

A base of rolling rules?

A ruling base cast of rollers?

A base of ruling rolls?

Rules based on rolls?

Ruling rollers and base movers?

Based on strategic rolls?

Based on ruling rolls?

A rule of base rolls?

A rule of based rollers?

Live and roll dice?

Licence to roll?

Dice roll number? (Dr no., Get it?)

Die roller?

Golden die?

00wargaming?

The rulership of the dice?

The two rangerulers?

The giving back of your loaned general model?

The hobby, an unintentional tournament?

The hobby, the destruction of 'least favourite player'?

The hobby, the scrap of several loners?

The magnificent wargamers?

A fistfull of dice?

For a few dice more?

The gamer, the painter and the neckbeard?

Dirty Hammer?

The dice files?

Roller die?

Every wargamer Joe and the rollers of the missed save.

Every wargamer Joe and the clubroom of dice.

Every wargamer Joe and the final campaign.

You get the idea.

A very fun exercise to keep us all thinking.
