"World War II brought several changes to what and how we eat. For example, members of the military traveled the globe during World War II, encountering different cuisines. When they returned, they brought back memories of those dishes. French, Italian, and Chinese food soon became popular in America beyond immigrant neighborhoods like Chinatowns and Little Italys.[1] Other changes were spurred by foods included in military rations and food produced using technologies developed during the war. I was born in '46 and fried Spam sandwiches were often found in our lunch boxes. Mom turned it in a little flour and fried it in a pan. It's on my "do not eat" list now, but I look back on it fondly. I never cared for it "raw" out of the can, however. |
