My Game of Thrones Poll is going down in flames, probably deservedly so. But, would you support a Tolkien board? The Lord of the Rings The Hobbit The Silmarillion All the other books I haven't read 🙄 I'm not counting Rings of Power, since that's blasphemous desecration. But once a Board is voted in, be my guest. |
John the OFM | 16 Aug 2025 8:56 a.m. PST |
This would include books, film, tv, games, miniatures, including proxies, etc. |
| RittervonBek | 16 Aug 2025 9:09 a.m. PST |
We could call it Middle Earth Board, but this introduces visions of corporate takeovers at Rivendell Inc. Regardless of name, yes let's do it. |

I agree with both points: 1) Supporting the board 2) RoP is an abomination |
piper909 | 16 Aug 2025 9:28 a.m. PST |
I suppose it's a sensible addition. As long as we get to slag Rings of Power without mercy! |
John the OFM | 16 Aug 2025 9:37 a.m. PST |
One could make a very strong point that Rings of Power is anti-Tolkien. Their own showrunners have admitted as much. |

I despise what RoP has done to defile the Professor's legacy. I forced myself to watch the first season and hated pretty much every minute and have stayed away from the second, altho' I've read reviews about what's been going on. Seems to just get worse and worse, from my point of view. |

Yes But only if it includes RoP :) |

Yes, I would read it. I am not a hardcore Tolkien enthusiast, but I am a hardcore fantasy enthusiast. I don't know if it would do better than the existing fantasy boards, however. Maybe it would, since the existing boards are mostly generic fantasy. I don't play Warhammer, never have, never will, so I very rarely ever visit those boards. To be honest, I could see creating separate GW fantasy boards -- GW stuff dominates the entire fantasy genre, no matter how much I don't care about GW. LOL! If it goes under a larger, GW wing, so to speak, I will likely ignore it entirely. I liked GW's fantasy figures in the 90's-2000's, but after that I lost interest completely. After they began applying their Warhammer business model to their LotR product line, I lost track and interest on that, as well. I guess my final answer is, "Maybe -- leaning towards not likely." Cheers! |

I don't think I know enough about the subject to support it, but I won't vote against it. |

One board to rule them all? |
Parzival | 16 Aug 2025 7:07 p.m. PST |
Given that I just finished running The Battle of Five Armies at Nashcon, I would certainly participate in a Tolkien board. On the other hand, the Fantasy Boards in general cover it— I've never felt that I couldn't discuss Tolkien's works or gaming around them, so a specific board might not be necessary. As for ROP I hate it so much I never watched any of it, aside from a trailer and a couple of "this is stupid" clips. Like the Magi, I was warned as if by a dream to go another way, and I did. Amazon+anything=pure carp. |

Well, if a non-wargaming person rates a board, it's Tolkien. That said, I think we're in some danger of becoming so specialized we don't talk to each other and miss good ideas because they're posted on the wrong board. So that's "Game of Thrones" (not George RR Martin) and "Tolkien" (not Lord of the Rings.) Is Robert E. Howard next? Or would it be a "Conan" board? |

Like the Secretary in Mission Impossible, I disavow any knowledge of the proposed Game of Thrones Board. I must have been drunk when I proposed it. Yes! That's the ticket! I was drunk. No? How about my TMP account was hacked? No? How about… |
John the OFM | 17 Aug 2025 10:42 a.m. PST |
Go to the Fantasy Message Board. link There at least 5 separate Boards for games, including 2 that I never even heard of. If Mordheim deserves a Board, why not Tolkien? |
John the OFM | 17 Aug 2025 11:35 a.m. PST |
By the way, I've noted in the past that USUALLY a new Board on a subject USUALLY results in an increase of threads on that subject. Stuff like: WHAT IF the Witch King captured the Ring? I am not convinced that he would not try to claim it. He was acting pretty independently for thousands of years. I think he would take and claim it. I'm pretty sure the Good Professor shot this down, but he changed his mind on a lot of things. |

Star Wars has its own board. Star Trek has its own board. Warhammer has at least four boards. There should certainly be a Tolkien board. There are a bunch of Tolkien-branded games. As for RoP it appears the OP has tried to hijack his own thread, which is funny by itself. So much derision spurs me to take the other side just for the sake of mischief. I would say per the Labor Theory of Value that RoP is obviously awesome seeing as it cost so much. We stopped watching it after a couple episodes because we were bored, but that's irrelevant. |

I've long thought we needed a place here to discuss: * Philology of Teutonic root languages and Finnish * His service as second lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers, experiencing the Battle of the Somme in 1916 * This training in cryptography for a short time in 1939, even if ultimately was not assigned to Bletchley Park * Detailed etymologies of words, especially walrus and walnut * Revitalization of the Leeds English department expected of a professor * Co-Authoring Songs for the Philologists * The Father Christmas Letters * Translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight * Translation Work for the Jerusalem Bible * The Inklings Literary Group, esp philosophical and theological discussions * Naffarin * Illustrating and Drawing geometric patterns, floral designs, and calligraphy * Long walks, especially in the countryside around Oxford and later Bournemouth * Gardening, especially roses and other plants at his Oxford home * Beer drinking and Pipe-Smoking Socializing * And, fo course, what it's like to be a professor at Oxford: grading exams, setting curricula, and fulfilling the bureaucratic duties |

The Father Christmas Letters rock! There are good game possibilities in those, as they developed an increasingly detailed mythos unique to themselves. |

No, but I ever support new boards as there are far too many already. I also rather enjoyed RoP, I thought the portrayal of Sauron the deceiver in the second series was fabulous,. Straight out of "The Fall of Numenor". |

Yes, sure if there was a Tolkien board, I would follow it in my feed. On the other hand we Tolkien enthusiasts have gotten along fine using the Fantasy and related boards. |
