The shield designs look great--by and large better than the ones I did years ago. You are right, by the time I'd painted all the shields for my army, I was pretty good at doing free hand designs. Much better than I am now. I did learn an easy way a circle or starburst of sort of elongated teardrops. My shields and brush were just the right sizes that I could press the side of the brush against the shield, so that the base where the hairs join the metal was larger, narrowing to the very thin tip of the brush. Do one straight up, one straight down, one left and one right, then fill in the vacant spaces. Grelber |

Well done. And nice article explaining your process and sources. Thanks for sharing. I've been down that journey myself. My favorite period is Ancient Greece and Persia and all of the adjacent eras. I've painted just over 1000 15mm hoplite shields (If you include my Carthaginian Spear) and I far prefer the look of well done, hand-painted shields as opposed to transfers. |
