I have several, and may add more as I think of them.

West Side Story, the 1961 version. Got a rocket in your pocket, stay cool Man!

The Music Man. Just so gosh darned American, and who doesn't love Robert Preston playing the biggest con man? But he doesn't know the territory! And of course Marion the Librarian.

Singing in the Rain. Debbie Reynolds!

By Bye, Birdie. Ann-Margaret!

Showboat. Old Man River!

There are no wrong answers, and you don't have to justify it. If you like Lee Marvin singing, no judgement. But at least mention Presnell! 😄

Paint Your Wagon?

Rocky Horror Picture Show?

Finian's Rainbow?

Jeff, I miss your games. My sister is a diehard Jane Austen fan, and I was proud to play Lt Sharpe in your PNP and Zombies game.

I must say that your game synopses make far more sense than the "book" of some movies and plays I could mention but won't. The restraining order is still valid.

Fun fact:
Stephen Sondheim has called "Rock Island", the opening number of The Music Man, the first case of rap music in a movie, and that he and other composers were too cowardly to follow through.
I said it was a "fun fact". I never said it was a "true fact".

Has Hamilton been a movie yet, or is it still only a play?

How come Marni Nixon would only be the voice of other actresses? I always thought she was quite pretty.

Paint Your Wagon is my favorite. Music Man is there also as I was in the play in high school.

The Sound of Music
Mary Poppins

I'm a sucker for young Julie Andrews.

Fiddler on the Roof

My dad would play the album from this at top volume when I was growing up. We're not Jewish, but this movie and music always resonated with me.

Sweeney Todd

My roommate in the Navy would play the Angela Lansbury album from this at top volume and somehow I both didn't kill him and grew to enjoy it.

Isn't there a set of gaming rules for gaming the Jets vs Sharks dance sequences in West Side Story?

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP13 Mar 2025 12:17 p.m. PST

"Cabaret" is great and "Evita," if some one else had played the lead role.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP13 Mar 2025 12:29 p.m. PST

In no particular order:

The Jungle Book
Mary Poppins
Beauty & the Beast
The Little Mermaid
Aladdin
The Wizard of Oz
Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang
Singing in the Rain
Cinderella
Sleeping Beauty
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
(Original Disney animated film, 1937)

Yes, these are all movie musicals— if the characters routinely burst into songs and even dance routines which are integral to the film, then it's a musical. Live or animated has no bearing on the question.

If Blues Brothers is a musical (I don't really regard it as one) then Blues Brothers.

Rocky Horror.

There is a filmed version of the stage production if that counts. I went in expecting to hate it and ended up really enjoying it.

My Fair Lady – Which I always loved, but then I discovered "On The Street Where You Live" (sung in Bb as a bass-baritone) is a panty-dropper and now I really love it.

Gypsy

Hello, Dolly!

@Shagnasty, when you consider what the real Eva Peron was like, the choice of Madonna wasn't a bad one.

I kinda like Anna and the Apocalypse. Hard to beat a Zombie musical. The crazed teacher steals the show.

The H Man13 Mar 2025 5:33 p.m. PST

Definitely My Fair Lady.

The DVD commentary on the restoration is second to none, or at least equal to the best.

On the town, yes.

Seven brides for seven brothers. Never realised it was shot on set, until watching the special features.

Harvey girls.

EASTER PARADE!!!

Top notch. Acting and dancing with a broken back is dedication, and the results!!! Though a couple of swells is hard to top. I'm just a fella, Easter bonnet, so on… and the fish face, apparently something she used to do?!

White Christmas.

Holiday inn. With the other Easter bonnet version.

So many.

So many yet to watch.

So many to re-watch.

Song of The South
Top Hat

To qualify as a musical the film has to have more than one song. And the songs have to contribute to the narrative of the plot.

I didn't want to make any rules, but I can't disagree with this. 👍
This would knock out Kelly's Heroes and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Great movies, but one dumb song doesn't make it a Musical.
+1

Don't like musicals so I avoid them mostly. I have watched a few with my wife, I consider that a short time in Purgatory.

Dal & Shagnasty, actually I forgot to list:
Hair

They did a superb job of retro-fitting a plot to the play, great songs — and in the dance numbers, don't watch the stars, the back-up dancers are Twyla Tharpe's company killing it with amazing choreography!

Thanks for the tip, Mo. A quick chase didn't bring up any hits in Oz, but I'll have a good look later.
