The fort at Tilbury, Essex, UK, started with Henry VIII. Queen Elizabeth reviewed and inspired her troops against the Armada here in 1588. In 1670 a Dutchman started building a star fort here… to defend against the Dutch. In the 18th century a huge double gunpowder magazine was built here. In 1746 it was a PoW camp for Highlanders from Culloden awaiting transportation. In the 1870s Gordon of Khartoum modernised it. In WW1 it shot at a Zeppelin. In WW2 it was bombed by the Luftwaffe. But it did not appear on an Ordnance Survey map until the 1970s as it was an Army site and still officially 'secret'. Great place. Just up the road from me. I walk the dog there sometimes. Coalhouse Fort just a little further downriver is a fine example of a later fort. |
