What is everyone using for their initial protective coat these days?

I use a gloss coat first, followed by a dull or matte coat from somewhere.

Testor's has gotten stupid expensive for tiny bottles of gloss coat.

I use Humrol enamel gloss for my first protective spray coat. Then follow up with a heavier brush applied coat of the same. But I'm guessing you're not talking about old-school shiny figures…

But for my figures that I finish matt, I go straight to Humbrol enamel spray matt varnish, then pick out items that shouldn't be matt with a brush using either Humbrol gloss or satin varnish. They seem to wear okay.

Winsor and Newton acrylic varnish, both gloss and matt, available from any respectable artists store.

I only use brush on varnishes but I expect that their spray options are just as good.

I use two layers of Modge Podge Matte. It isn't actually terribly matte, though. So, the next day when it is all dry, I spray on a layer of DullCote.

I always use gloss coat, 2 heavy layers. I like my figures to shine😎

Fastest is any gloss clear coat aerosol. Wal-Mart has what you need (Krylon @ $6.47 USD/12 oz. spray can), as well as all hobby stores.

You can also go with a brush-on formula: Quick Shine Floor Finish, water-based acrylic formula, dries in 15 minutes, and the 27 oz. bottle will last the rest of your natural life -- seriously. Designed to be walked upon, by people wearing rubber-soled shoes… About the strongest thing money can buy and apply, to protect your miniature figures' paint. Cheers!

Satin or semi-gloss usually. Then matte after basing and grassing, and then I paint metals.

I use aerosol gloss spray for my plastic figures and matte spray for all of my metal figures.
