That sounds very useful. Please keep us informed. |

I am looking for a few good men (or women). I am hoping that persons interested in this map will "beta test" a copy (help me proof read for spelling, historical accuracy and other concerns.) As much as I hate to admit it, I sometimes make mistakes. Although I have a copy for testing, I am still able to make changes as needed. Anyone want to give it a try? Your valuable feedback is what I'm after. Cheers!

My last post was on Feb 7 and it was posted in the wrong order and dated Feb 6. Has "da bug" struck again? Cheers!

I have finished my 17th century campaign map of Germany. It is based on many maps from the period, modern satellite maps, and historical research. Does the map show all of what is now modern Germany? No. Are there inaccuracies? Probably. The product is a hex map, about 2' by 3'. It is similar to old Avalon Hill board game maps, with the hexes measuring 5/8". Each hex represents between 9 and 10 miles, or about a day's march for unmotivated infantry of the period. Better infantry might manage 2 hexes a day. Major towns and cities, roads, rivers and bridges are indicated along with terrain features. These are also named. I had planned to show a detail of the map but there seems to be a problem linking to the Flickr file. I was able to do this fairly easily before, so I'm guessing there has been a change somewhere. If there are some who are interested, my plan is to share the product, although I will release a lower resolution version to discourage anyone who would try to sell it for profit. I haven't worked out yet how to get the map to the folks who might be interested.
I'm hoping the map will be useful for more strategic movements associated with campaigns in 17th century Germany. It might also be of use for the wars of Louis XIV. (PS. Hooray! I got the image to work. I may have to repost the entire message because I might be a victim of the infamous bug. I know TMP was doing some updating when I made my initial post. Strange thing is I am still able to edit the message several hours later. Is this a new feature?) Cheers! Gallo |

Hello Gallo, I have been interested in this project of yours since you first introduced it about three years ago. Maps have always intrigued me and I served in Germany for three years. I don't know how much – or even if – I can assist, but I'm game (no joke intended). Please contact me by email thru my website ‘Contact' page at thoroughbredmodels.com. Then we can carry on one-to-one if you are interested. I am aware of your concerns about copyright issues and perhaps distribution as well – I have them in my own line of work. Gallo, Type my website address directly into your browser to go to my website. Clicking on the link in my previous TMP message this morning will not work. Toby Barrett |

Hi Toby, I'm very encouraged that you are interested in my map. Thanks for being willing to help me on this project. I'm thinking the whole reason that no such map existed until now is because most people simply aren't interested. That's fine, but then it seemed to me that now there are a choice few here at TMP who would want to use such a product. The map, I will consider to be "freeware." It is currently in the "beta test" phase. I will use the input from beta testers to improve the product and release a final draft after that. Already, someone here at TMP has offered to make his website available for release and distribution. I was able to find thoroughbredmodels. It is a site for RR modelers. Please let me know if this is the correct website. It might be easier for you to simply email me at: gallocelt@yahoo.com I have sent the map through Yahoo email and it went through just fine. Since it is a low resolution copy, I feel this product is secure from piracy. It's simply too low of a resolution to use as a commercial product. Cheers!

It's been great following all of the discussion here, but can I ask what your end goal is for the map? Will you produce more maps for adjoining areas? Just curious. Thanks! |

Hello 18th Century Guy, I made the 17th Century map of Germany for myself but thought I would share it with others. I plan to use it for Thirty Years War and for the wars of Louis XIV as a campaign map. I have made other similar maps. Many years ago, I made a map of the Spanish Netherlands, mostly useful for War of the League of Augsburg and War of the Spanish Succession. I made a map of Spain but simply adapted an old map (1708), colorized it and put a scale of miles and hexes on it. TMP link Cheers!

Gallo, Thank you for the information. Are you able to share the map of the Spanish Netherlands? My group likes that period, along with th SYW, and it might be useful for generating battles. Thank you! |

The map of the Spanish Netherlands I made quite a while ago. I didn't do a lot of research for it but enough to make it fairly accurate for the period. I only now have a printed copy (pasted onto cardboard). Not sure what I did with the original Photoshop-built files. I plan to make a better map that would cover much of the Dutch Republic, the Spanish Netherlands and Northern France. Sadly, it isn't a priority. I am mostly using my hobby time to paint up my 15mm Spanish Succession armies. Cheers!
