I don't currently have the ability to use a 4x6 surface but I have plenty of 25/28mm Biblicals that are aching for a fight.
I'm aware of DBMM100, ALDG 100 points, Intro Armati etc. I'm just wondering if any of you have experienced both full sized games AND reduced size games using those rules sets or others, and if so:
Which set maintains its flavor the best with smaller size forces?

What size table DO you have? And how are the figures based? Makes a difference.

4X3 and WRG standard. I guess I really could just play DBA…

Of course, another way to phrase my post would be to simply ask which Ancients ruleset gives the best Condensed game?

Drat! I'd have put in a plug for "Big Battle" DBA, but that's not enough table with 60mm frontages. (I use 40mm frontages packed with 6mm figures.) Several other options involve individually-based figures.

Not something I've tried in a long time, but a friend used to speak highly of "Tactica." Most people speak of Armati being superior, though.

If you want just a few figures on table, you could do worse than 'Sword Weirdos' link

To the Strongest works very well with 28mm figures on a 6x4 table with 6" squares. There's no reason you couldn't use 3" squares on your small table, with one DBM base per unit, since number of bases doesn't matter for the rules anyway.

DBA sounds, as you say, like an obvious option.

DBMM 100 would work well too, for a similar but a bit more detailed game. It retains much of the flavour of the full game, but feels, obviously, DBA-like in that you've got only one general.

Another vote for "To the Strongest." Grid based and gives a very good game. It looks and feels like a battle.

Anything with a grid works fine, particularly with element basing. We play Command and Colours Ancients in 28mm on a 3x4 all the times me. To the Strongest, Lost Battles, The Portable Wargame would work fine too.

Or just play DBA.

- "Ancient and Medieval Wargaming" by Neil Thomas, you can play on a 4'x3' with your basing;
- "One Hour Wargames" by the same author, on a 3'x 3'
- "Mighty Armies – Ancients" is an interesting alternative to DBA

@Deserter
Thanks for that-I have Ancient and Medieval Wargaming on my nightstand.

How can you remember all those rules? I have enough problems remembering how to play one set of rules.
