Here's a blog post on special formations in Optio, focussing on line relief.

It's nice that Optio takes this into account. |

I'm doing 10 bases to a legion (5 hastati and 5 princeps), with each base of 40mm x 20 mm holding 14 figures in two rows of seven figures. With your rules having four bases to a legion, I'm fast on my way to Cannae. I have no bases for the triarii as they guarded the camp. |

I whittled the legion down to the bare bones. Triarii rarely featured in actual battles (the only ones I can think of are the battles of Vesuvius and Pharsalus – in the latter the Pompeian third line was committed) so I removed them. Velites sometimes operated separately from the legion so I allow for that, but it seems simpler, when they're part of the legion, just to assume they're there and give the legion their missile ability. I suppose one could add velites stands if one wanted to – I'll leave that up to the player. |

Oh, I should have said the 14 figures to a base are 10mm from Cromforty Forge 3D miniatures. Agree, whittling the legion down to bare bones is a good move, and also agree, triarii not on battlefield, but defending camp, so not needed on the table. Ok, gotta get back to debating you on SOA forum. |
