Was wondering what cavalry escorted Archduke Charles around the battlefield, etc. Napoleon had the Chasseurs a cheval of the Imperial Guard. What did Archduke Charles have? |

Probably a Stabs-dragoner squadron? |

Staff dragoons (Stabsdragoner) – 10 squadron regiment formed by drafts of the most reliable troopers from the existing dragoon regiments at the start of a campaign to guard baggage trains and escort the big brass – as I recall dragoon helmet, green coat – solid troops who probably should be classed as elite |

During the early stages of the 1809 campaign Napoleon's headquarters guard was a detachment of Wurttemberg cavalry. |

In 1809 and after, (boringly) the Stabsdragoner wore white coats. |

In the revolution they did wear the hat, the original blue coat was changed to green to avoid confusion with the French, also then they did wear a hat. |

OK. That gives me something to work with. I was aware that the Austrian dragoons and cheveau legers swapped coats on an irregular basis during the period. I should have known it depended on the year, month and day. (Joking.) (von Winterfeldt: Who is they? What hat? Not a big thing if you don't get this message.) |
