When I first read about this, I was very uneasy. I have never really considered the assassination of senior military officers as a legitimate military target while far behind the lines. I then realized how that position is stupid, especially in the context of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Russia has made the whole of Ukraine the "front lines," so why shouldn't Ukraine do the same. This is likely to open the door for Putin to order targeted assassinations throughout Ukraine. I do not see him letting this "scootercide" go unanswered. |

Payback is a Muth'a comrade … I have never really considered the assassination of senior military officers as a legitimate military target while far behind the lines. No it seems today they are. Especially if they committed war crimes, etc. I then realized how that position is stupid, especially in the context of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Russia has made the whole of Ukraine the "front lines," so why shouldn't Ukraine do the same. Bingo ! This is likely to open the door for Putin to order targeted assassinations throughout Ukraine. I do not see him letting this "scootercide" go unanswered. Well Putin targeted Zelensky for assassination for a long time at the start of the war. So frankly I don't think Putin's minions are or will be very good at targeted killing. As happened here with this Russian GEN. Even at the beginning of the war Ukrainian snipers serviced a number of Russian GENs and even an ADM or two … |

Legion – I didn't realize that Putin had tried to take-out Zelensky already. It seems as if Zelensky is everywhere and that he would make an easy target. That said, Ukraine does certainly appear to have the better of Russia when it comes to intelligence (military/political) and it is never easy to assassinate a head of state. For purposes of this post, I am considering assassination as the targeted killing of a military individual while not within the broad geographic confines of the front lines or battlefield, carried out by those identifying with the opposing force. I have tried to search for and/or recall other instances where ranking military leaders have been assassinated outside the battlefield at time of war (outside of the Russo-Ukraine war) and can only come-up with a few. The U.S. essentially assassinated Adm. Yamamoto and the British attempted to assassinate Rommel in North Africa, I believe. I do not include the U.S. elimination of Soleimani or targeted strikes by Israel and others that are associated with combating terrorism. There are also a number of assassinations that took place in civil war or revolution type conflicts, according to the internet (so it has to be true). Then again, the Yamamoto killing is not included on the Wikipedia list I consulted, so I am sure that there are a lot of instances not captured? Can killing a military officer during time of war ever be considered assassination, regardless of where that individual is attacked? If America blew-up Yamamoto in his house in Japan instead of shooting his plane down during an inspection trip in the battle zone, would that be an assassination? Is targeted assassination an accepted tactic for fighting a conventional war? The assassinations that I am aware of by Ukraine can generally by categorized as retribution for acts on the battlefield that go beyond what can be described as "civilized" war, such as use of poison gas or mistreatment of prisoners of war or targeting civilians. Perhaps I am overthinking this topic. If you know that an opposing general's headquarters is located at a specific place, you would try to destroy that headquarters together with everyone in the headquarters, such as recently accomplished by Ukraine with use of the storm shadow missiles. So, in those cases, you wouldn't have to task a hit team to take-out the general. Likewise, if a sniper fires on a ranking officer who shows his head across the battlefield, that is not assassination. There should be nothing wrong, therefore, with eliminating a general who has been identified at his home, off the battle field? I would like to think that a decision would be made while considering whether "innocent" persons would be injured. Then again, if the military/political benefit is significant enough, does it come down to a simple cost/benefit analysis? I am glad that I do not have to make those decisions. |

The UK tried several times to get Hitler. Is carpet bombing Penemunde to get the V2 rocket scientists okay but blowing up one guy a problem? If you are at war anyone who is aiding the other side in a material way is a legitimate target, IMHO. And that is particularly true of those in uniform or otherwise in the government of a belligerent power. Mike Bunkermeister Creek |

Despite my less than cogent earlier post, I agree, any "leader" of a belligerent and/or any individual who is seeking to injure my country or citizens is a legitimate target. To me, the interesting point is the apparent (?) change in attitude from at least the American prospective. In particular, the often cited debate about whether to order the downing of Yamamoto's plane and whether that was an act of war or "murder." I think that the correct decision was made in that case and I believe that the British attempts on Hitler fall in the same category. Are there historical examples of assassination being used as a war-fighting tactic? I'm not an expert and have not really studied the issue, however, I cannot think of any instances. I guess the attempt on Napoleon, however, I think that was internal rather than external? |

I believe there is nothing illegal about killing a member of the military of a country you are at war with who, quite specifically, is actively involved in planning and conducting that war. I see this as analogous to the US killing Yamamoto or the British killing Heydrich. Both were wartime killings of combatants (even if Heydrich was more butcher of innocents than soldier). |

"Are there historical examples of assassination being used as a war-fighting tactic?" In 1864 Gen. Kilpatrick and Col. Ulric Dahlgren led a cavalry raid n Richmond to try to free captured Union prisoners. Dahlgren was killed. On his body were found orders to burn Richmond and kill Jeff Davis and his cabinet. In 1865 Lincoln was assassinated and some now argue that Booth was being directed by the Confederate Secret Service. When we entered Afghanistan in 2001 the Taliban leader Mulla Omar was targeted at one point by a drone operator. A junior JAG officer ordered the operator not to kill him as he was a civilian. Rumsfield was furious. So, yes, its been done before. |

That said, Ukraine does certainly appear to have the better of Russia when it comes to intelligence (military/political) and it is never easy to assassinate a head of state. Yes Putin was to has sent in "hit Squads/Teams" a number of times at the beginning of the war. As soon as he found out Ukraine was going roll over in 3 days. And his losses mounted … Are there historical examples of assassination being used as a war-fighting tactic? More recently, Iran's top Spec Ops GEN Suleimani was taken out by a Drone in Iraq during the Trump admin. Some may argue the point, however, he was an enemy GEN during the GWOT. In a combat zone. I believe what the IDF has done recently during the ongoing war. Killing off many Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, etc. many in Iran, Gaza and Syria. Was not illegal and very effective. Again with the GWoT the rules have been expanded so to speak. Plus the SEALs took out ISIS's top leader Al-Baghdadi a few back. And more recently AQ's 2IC AZK was droned shortly after the A'stan withdrawal debacle. When it comes to the GWoT, I think the saying "Kill them all and let God sort them out." is appropriate … As well as "The only good terrorist is a dead one." … |

This is a good example of what happens when people decide to ignore the rules and customs of war and international conduct, and discover that other people can ignore them right back. Wellington told a battery commander not to fire at Napoleon at Waterloo, and there was a time when even sniping was thought uncomfortably close to murder. Fast forward a century or so, and Roosevelt and Frank Knox sought the advice of religious leaders before they agreed to Yamamoto's assassination. Since then, the KGB and its successors have been restrained in targeting either domestic dissenters or foreign adversaries principally by the question of whether the blowback would be worse than the gain. The FSB has assassinated people both at home and in foreign countries, in both war and peace; the only argument the Russians have left in response to this murder is, "wait and see what we do to you." Sometimes a society gets what it deserves. |

Legion 4, Putin planned to kill Zelensky? How many missile strikes did the Russians launch on the government quarter in Kyiv? Grattan54, there is not a single confirmed case of the Russians or Ukrainians using unconventional weapons. But there are Western laboratories captured by the Russians in Ukraine. And the murdered general was engaged in research in this direction. I think this is the reason why the attack was directed specifically against him. link You should have noticed that a high-ranking Russian general lived in an ordinary apartment building, among ordinary citizens, without any special security (only the driver of his official car)… Parzival, I hope that this will lead to Putin finally taking off his "white gloves" and starting to fight "like adults". For example, completely destroy Ukraine's energy sector, destroy the Beskydy Tunnel and the remaining bridges across the Dnieper. And finally, he will also move on to terror against the leadership of the Ukrainian armed forces. Zelensky, as I understand it, decided to copy the methods of Israel's total war… And the West supports such methods. Oh well. We'll take this into account for the future ;) |

Oh, the noble Putin with his loving bombing of population centers, schools, and children's hospitals. How could we not all see his generosity and kindness of spirit? It was out of love that he emptied Russia's prisons of rapists and murderers, and sent them instead to ravage the children of Ukraine! Was it not from his heart that he conscripted hundreds of thousands of Russian sons and gave them rifles that didn't shoot, tanks that couldn't run, and officers who couldn't lead, and sent them into battle for a few measly strips of land, for his own great glory! All hail the wondrous man of peace that is Putin! Praise his name to the heavens! Oh, his righteousness is indeed immeasurable! … NOT! (In case I wasn't clear.) And it doesn't surprise me that you spout anti-Semite propaganda straight from the Islamofascist state of Iran. "Total War"? Seriously? Rape, beheading babies, and torture are "total war." Once, a strike was made on the government quarter – a single precise strike destroyed the government communications center.
