Brigades were usually commanded by someone holding the rank of General Major. |

Here's a good reference on the Austrian rank structure: link It must be noted that "Germanic" countries' ranks equated a brigade commander to a generalmajor, a division commander to a generalleutnant/feldmarschalleutnant, and a corps commander to a general der infanterie/feldzeugmeister or kavallerie. But of course officers of one rank lower could and did command at one level higher, so a brigade commander could be an oberst (colonel) or a division commander could be a generalmajor. Jim |
