A swarm of bats. My first painted miniature in about a year. It fits the season and wasn't too much of a challenge for my rusty skills. I went for a nighttime scene. It's all drybrushing and highlighting over a black base coat.

Looks cool. Gotta get it at the right angle though.

I have that one as well. I went with a grey tombstone to help with contrast. We painted the bats the same; black with a grey drybrush. Now, on to your next miniature. Keep it up.

Looks pretty blah in the photos.

It is bones though, so that may be part of it.

Striking contrast may be better than drybrushing in this case.

The bats seem undefined and a real mess. I mostly blame the cast.

I'd paint the head stone very light grey or cream and highlight white.

More of a brown dirt and maybe some flock.

From black, paint the bats bodies grey, the wings pink-maroon, for contrast with grey bones.

Eyes white, red or yellow.

Something like that, for max contrast.

Last things I did like these were LOTR ones. But they were more spread out and sharper cast.

That's better, but still, it's a horror of a cast. Very appropriate.

Like the figures – has it fired you up to get painting again?

Zombicide made some nice flying bats, as I recall, that I have repurposed for Fantasy gaming and dungeon delving.

It's not my best work, but it's not meant to be. It's the first step towards getting back into the hobby. I've started working on the next one. Then it's one more at a time until it becomes a habit again.

Good for you! When I hit a slump my way back in is always to paint something that only needs a few colours.

@ Paul Walks
Don't you mean crows?
And if so yes they are very nice.

Paul Walks08 Dec 2024 4:26 a.m. PST

@Quatermass, yes you are right, the nice Zombicide minis were a murder of crows, but Mantic Games did a do bat swarms, which you can now only get as part of a critter pack for their dungeon system.

Highly recommend those crows a very elegant design.
