Another fun game of V&F v3 here in San Antonio Texas this past Friday. We played a scenario out of the GdB scenario books – this week it was Ekhmul 1809. We have been using the scenario books to set up some very interesting games.
The Austrians were holding two forward villages (hard cover) and a low hill behind. The French mission was to take the two villages and assault the hill.
Rick Ashby and I commanded the French, and Grant Johnson and Martin Zamarripa controlled the Austrians. The French began the game by launching their 3 brigades agains the two villages, one Brigade and the Divisional Artillery on the left and two Brigades on the right. The Austrians had one bridge in each village with two bridgades holding the hill and woods.
The attack started well, but quickly broke down as we really didn't understand how the hard cover villages effected the combat resolution. I think we calculated the dice for the attacker incorrectly because it became very apparent that an overwhelming attack (4 battalions vs 1 defender) was not enough to dislodge the Austrians.
After two turns of melee the French were thrown back and unable to continue the attack. Austrian reserves off the hill, and a cavalry brigade making its way around the French left flank resulted in a French withdrawl and an Austrian victory.
We did enjoy working our way through the new rules, we plan to play again in 2 weeks as Rick Ashby wants to test out his scenario he plans to run at MillenniumCon 2024 31 October – 3 November in Temple Texas.
