It depends (sorry). At least in the ADF Danger Close procedures are used at the gun end for targets closer than 600m for improved accuracy. However, at the other end, the more useful factor is the Operational Safety Distance. Standard OSD for 155mm is 200m for groundburst ammo and 300m for airburst natures. However, this can be modified on the basis of the ground commander's willingness to accept increased risk. Other factors will include the degree of protection (dug in/ OHP/ under armour etc) and line of fire in relation to friendly troops. For covering fire in the assault it will vary between 125m (bit risky) and 450m (pretty safe) depending on the Risk Estimate Distance the commander is prepared to accept for friendly casualties from shell splinters.
