Flames of War bases were like that as well. Hated them.

Nifty idea. Gotta be careful around pets and small children with those things.
My only real qualm is aesthetics… but the base isn't all that aesthetic to begin with.

Should also work with one magnet and one piece of steel.

Might be able to stick down some FlexSteel on top, then use the thumbtack magnet.

Might be able to stick down some magnet sheet too (maybe blue).

Or you could drill a hole and put a handle on the base. grin

You could also put 'handles' permanently on the back corners of the base.

I am not a big fan of colored markers on stands, but they can appear more glaring in a photo than in person.

Nice idea!

I've used those K&J thumbtacks on game panels as trackers (those panels tin sheet backed).

For air games they look like little joysticks.

Other game uses (first here my thumbtack conversions – in experiments for marking damage levels) -
