I agree with the article. But also look at tactics. Also, were the Finns mostly defending against offensive sorties? What were the Russian pilots orders? Could the deviate from their standing orders? |

The Soviet fighter escort could certainly engage in an effort to protect any bomber or recon aircraft, so there was some flexibility there. I've read of several encounters of a handful of Finns pitching into two, three, or even more times their number of Soviet fighters. |
