D-day has also drawn the attention of numerous filmmakers over the years. Here are ten of the best D-day films, each suggestive of the invasion's prominent place in international memory.

Overlord looks raunchy!

Martin – Overlord (1975) was on TCM yesterday – not really about D-Day that much – more of what used to be called a "pot-boiler" or pulp-fiction movie.

Saw Overlord yesterday, didn't like it, too weird.

Those first 20 or so minutes in "Saving Private Ryan" were epic.

I liked "Overlord." It's very much of its time. A small budget b/w British feature of the mid-70s. Becuase of the intimate scale, it achieves a fairly authentic period atmosphere. It's not really about the landings, though, which feature marginally.* The film is more a meditation on one individual's apprehension of death, intensified by the tentative romance he has shortly before embarking.

The tone is elegaic, but with no sentimentality and or heroics other than a young man reluctantly being prepared to do his bit.
{*Spoiler alert: as the poster campaign of the time hinted, our man does not get very far up the beach}

I haven't seen No.1, have probably seen 'The Longest Day' too often, didn't like 'D-Day, the Sixth of June' or 'Overlord', agree that the first 20 minutes of 'Pvt Ryan' were awesome but the one I most enjoy is the Ike one with Tom Selleck. Not much action but the characterisation is for me first class.
