WW2 at sea has inspired many a great naval movie : Run silent, run deep; Sink the Bismark! ; Tota!Tora!Tora!; the battle of Midway (with Sensurround !) ; The Boat
I'm forgetting many I'm sure. But my favourite will be "The Caine Mutiny", which turns 70 precisely this year. You certainly don't have the kind of special effects of later years… but certainly a great scenario centered on psychology & command as well as naval action. And Humphrey Bogart at his best as Captain Quegg. Truly an astounding performance!

So, among those I quoted, and those I forgot but I'm sure you'll bring them back, what is your favorite WW2 naval movie?

Tora!Tora!Tora! followed closely by In Harm's Way.

Add Mr Roberts to the list along with They Were Expendable for fun movies

Otherwise Destination Tokyo and The Cruel Sea

The Cruel Sea (Jack Hawkins brilliant as the captain of Compass Rose and Saltash Castle).

The Battle of the River Plate is a good one on the fate of the Graf Spee

More to consider:

Away All Boats
The Enemy Below
Operation Petticoat
U-571 (Yeah, I know it wasn't the Americans. Still a decent flick.)

Honorable mention TV-show: McHale's Navy

Of the above additions, my personal favorite is Operation Petticoat

Too many to choose from! But no mentions for The Cruel Sea or The Gift Horse? About time someone CGI'd some better ships into the Battle of the River Plate.

The Cruel Sea

Runner up is, Corvette K225, with Randolph Scott if only because it has both Barry Fitzgerald and Noah Beery in the same picture.

In Which We Serve. never saw that coming. I'll watch that just to hear the pom pom and crew banter.

The Bttle of the River Plate is very good.

@VonBlucher, I only saw a trailer for Greyhound a few months ago, and reviews seem to be a little thin on the ground. How do you rate it, and how would you say it compares to The Cruel Sea?

Never seen OPeration Petticoat. Don't think it was ever broadcast in my neck of the woods (France). Googled it, looks like it must be fun.
