"Hills are one of the basic staples of wargaming terrain. Easy and cheap to make, everybody has them! Mountains on the other hand are a different story. They require a lot more work to make, and are very difficult to make playable and realistic looking at the same time. If you decide to go with modular ones like we did then it becomes even harder. This system was the fastest, and easiest way we could come up with to make gaming mountains…"

Interesting, that its madular I assume helps with storage. However give the relatively low slope of the "mountain" why make it stepped a slope of aboun 1 in 2, figures would stand on it. In the old days we did do stepped hills. I used layers of foam, others used ply. However they were never to my mind very satisfactory. So what drove the use of stepps? |

I exclusively use stepped hills in my games. I used my hot wire foam cutter to carve up open cell packing foam into mostly 1"-tall ovals. I covered these with scraps of the tight weave indoor/outdoor carpet I used for 'ground cloth' on my tabletop. They match the ground cloth carpet; they're completely modular; they were inexpensive; and they function superbly, without figure stands falling down them -- the tiered levels are a compromise, as is everything else in the game. You pick your abstraction levels, and game on. Cheers! |
