looking at the detailed maps, both contemporary and modern, for the Battle of Buena Vista, I want to build tabletop terrain that covers the major terrain challenges, but leaves out many of the extraneous ridges and ravines. Has anyone tried this before? I am scheduled to run the game in May and I will be limited to how many terrain pieces I can carry in my luggage. I would like to avoid the old chalk marks on brown paper, but maybe the next step up?

Have you looked at the Fire and Fury scenario here: PDF link

From this website: link

Probably one of the better maps of Buena Vista I've seen as far as simplicity and they even have an image of tabletop version. Perhaps try to find Google images of other people's tabletop versions of the battlefield.

I am interested in gaming the MAW and have gamed some of the battles but have avoided Buena Vista because I don't really know how to do the battlefield justice on the tabletop.

Prince Alberts Revenge, Thank you, that's a great link! I think I can simplify it further. Most maps make it look like exploded pig's entrails.

Glad it can be of some assistance Nick! All of those scenario PDFs are truly awesome work. I wholeheartedly agree with your vivid description of most topographical maps of the battlefield!
