All this was going on just before I was born in 1954.
The French disaster of Dien Bien Phu.
Given the outcome here, it makes the subsequent Vietnam War sadly inevitable in both extent and outcome. Even President Eisenhower feared deeper US involvement in the 'French' war in Vietnam.

Martin Windrow's 'The Last Valley' is a very good updated history, too.

Valley of the Shadow & Valley of Death, are both good reads as well. Suggest you read Fall's book first. I also liked Howard Simpson's book. But will have to say that the one I enjoyed most after Fall is Windrow's The Last Valley.
