You were asked – TMP link

Which no-longer-published miniature-wargaming magazine is the one you wish was still around?

25% said "MWAN"
24% said "The Courier"
12% said "Military Modelling"

(Note: I believe Military Modelling was included by accident, it did not make the cut! grin)

Thanks again Hal

I was fortunate to discover issue #32 in a local hobby shop when I was in middle school. It opened my eyes to the possibilities of wargaming.

The magazine that did more to launch Old Glory into the spotlight--- more that any other magazine or medium!!
Great magazine!
Great job and labor of love Hal!

Best regards

No offense to the Courier, but I'm surprised it was even close. Every issue of MWAN was a bundle of ideas and opportunities.

And I did not understand the addition of Military Modelling to be accidental--more an observation that what it is now is very different from what it used to be. This often happens to institutions (and people) who live long enough.

My friend COL Jim and I each got a few letters published in MWAN. Hal is a great guy and the label sticker onners were good too.

I enjoyed both MWAN and The Courier, but agree MWAN is the one I wish had been able to survive transition into the Internet Age.

I think the charm of MWAN was the homespun style written for gamers and by gamers with none of the glossy photo eye candy necessary to reach it's dedicated audience.

…What Russ just said! The tone of Hal's writing has yet to be matched!

Still available electronically on Wargames Vault. I recently received permission from the publisher to post some MWAN content on The Wargames Forum.

Getting the latest issue in the mail was like Christmas morning. Dropped everything and dove right in.

Hal did an incredible job and brought a lot of information and happiness to us all!

Thank you everyone for your kind words and remembering MWAN. I am honored to be mentioned in the same breath as my friend Dick's COURIER. I should mention when the first issue of MWAN came out, Dick sent me a sizable check to help out. I know he has done this to others as well. MWANers were always a very supportive loyal group. Thank you.t

I loved the Courier as well and Dick is an old friend also.
My first love of wargames magazines though was the "wargamers digest"
The first one I ever had picked up was at my local hobby store who stocked them.
Great and fond memories.

I was not a regular subscriber or reader of MWAN, it seemed to slip under my radar for much of its existence (perhaps living in Austin at the time, I did not find it as relevant to me personally, or was not active in those Midwest organizations?) But I did correspond with Hal from time to time and he printed a few articles, reviews, and cartons I sent him. I missed when MWAN ceased publication. And now I'm sorry I was not a better supporter and contributor. I even live back in the Midwest now! O the irony!

I think I have all the issues. Kept them all, and periodically I read through a few issues. Like seeing an old friend again! And, of course, I get to see the names of many old friends as well. Wonderful reminders of a special time. I actually looked forward to Hal stopping publication from time to time. Seemed like every time he did that, he ended up adding a few more pages magazine. Thanks, Hal.

I can't believe I missed this thread; I would have jumped on it right away.
